A 12-month plan for surviving diabetes

The most
frightening moment for most people with diabetes is when they are first
diagnosed. They are filled with questions: What can I eat? What should I
do? Is there a plan for me to follow? While some people get a plan from
their doctor, most people do not. Your First Year with Diabetes is the
plan for everyone. It walks you step-by-step through a first-30-days
survival plan, then shows a month-by-month program for what comes next.
Everything from a basic explanation of diabetes, what you can eat right
away, and instructions on how to check glucose to a deeper knowledge
about diabetes nutrition, avoiding complications, and better management.
Your First Year with Diabetes also anticipates and explains problems
such as depression, illnesses, and needing to lose
weight.

This book is amazing. It was exactly what I needed after my diabetes diagnosis.

If you have received that diagnosis you know exactly how I felt. I felt angry that it wasn't fair. I felt terrified about what diabetes could do to my life. I felt guilty that I had somehow done this to myself.

The format of this book is perfect. For the first 30 days, you learn one thing per day. You just have to read a few pages each day. For those first 30 days that was perfect. I wasn't ready to tackle carb counting and exercise and everything else that managing diabetes entails.

On day 1, it told me to manage my thoughts about diagnosis. It told me to relax and realize that everything is going to be okay. It told me to visualize a hawaiian beach for 5 minutes.

That sounds cheesy, but that is exactly what I needed to get my mental health back.

On day 2, the book explains what diabetes is. This is such a misunderstood disease. I didn't realize that until I was diagnosed with it and had to confront the misinformation in my own head.

From there I learned about diet, exercise, checking my blood sugar and all of the other basics. I like that the book took me through everything I could possibly need to know, starting with mental health and moving from there. This book assumes you know nothing, which is where I was.

After 30 days, you learn something every week instead of every day. From there the subjects start to become more complex. After about 3 months I went ahead and just finished the book. By that point I was already managing the disease pretty well and had lost about 30 pounds.

I will be referring back to this book frequently. I can't give it enough praise. It gave me comfort at a point in my life where there was nowhere to turn for comfort, but it also gave me information that may have saved my life down the road.

If you have recently been diagnosed (or if it's been a while but you still need information) buy this book, it is 100% worth it! ...more

I have to say after getting the news out of the blue about being Type 1 it was a shock. After much researching online and reading and trying to understand it seemed like things were getting more confusing. I have to say that this book was THE BEST book out there. It explains a lot of things, while it's geared more towards Type 2, there is still information regarding Type 1. It also sheds light in a humorous way on things instead of just getting into "doctor speak" and like most books I've found I have to say after getting the news out of the blue about being Type 1 it was a shock. I recommend this book for anyone who has been recently diagnosed or of someone who is going through with it. I showed this book to my family about certain things and it helped them make more sense of what was going on with me instead of the "can't touch you or I'll get your disease if I do". It explains a lot of things and sheds lights on what is "to come" as you being to deal with the new lifestyle. ...more

This book is an incredible resource if you're just starting down the road of diabetes. She writes with humor, candor, and encouragement. I was about twenty pages into this as a library book when I bought it for myself; it was that good.

The worksheets are helpful if you haven't already started tracking. She goes through the risks, and how to manage them. I read this straight through and found it answered questions I didn't even know I had; I anticipate being able to come back to this again and This book is an incredible resource if you're just starting down the road of diabetes. Highly recommended for any stage of diabetes. ...more

There's a wealth of information in this little book. With her quirky sense of humor and talent for taking a sometimes daunting amount of information for the newly diagnosed and breaking it down into smaller, more palatable doses, Garnero creates a useful and perhaps life-saving read.

Very informative for the recently diagnosed. This will be a book that I refer to often.

A wonderful resource for those that have just been diagnosed with diabetes. It applies both to Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
