As world-renowned psychologist, life strategist, and television host Dr. Phil McGraw, in his Foreword to placement and recruitment specialist par excellence Tony Beshara’s work Unbeatable Résumés: America’s Top Recruiter Reveals What Really Gets You Hired, asserts, “Tony is one of the top placement and recruitment specialists in the United States, and with him in your corner you have an incredible advantage.”

The simplicity and directness of Beshara’s approach make for a winning combination. From start, “The Top Ten (BIG) Mistakes of Résumé Writing,” to finish, “The Top Ten Rules (You Now Know) of Résumé Writing,” Beshara forcefully presents the knowledge that he has gained from 38 years in the recruitment field, speaking directly to HR professionals and hiring managers, as well as handling hundreds of résumés each week. The current recessionary climate has left many experienced but retrenched managers floundering, having to face the possibility of indefinite and daunting periods of unemployment, the like of which they have never before seen. If this has happened to you, Beshara shows a way out from the maelstrom of despair and despondency brought on by realizing that the plushest of carpets has been pulled out from under your feet. By following the guidelines that he offers for constructing and reinventing your résumé, you, too, will be able to gain the leverage that you need into the bright new world of tomorrow.

Having informed you cogently and succinctly of the nature of the audience that you are likely to have to bear in mind, as well as of the key features of the most effective résumé, Beshara, at the heart of his book, provides over 80 pages of sample résumés covering a wide spectrum of positions in many leading industries and professions. No matter which position you aspire to attain, Beshara gives you the lead-in to the career of your choice. His pointers show how you can maximize the high points of your past in order to secure a placement that is ideal for your future. Having helped you to refine and bring your résumé up to date in the most meaningful and relevant way possible, Beshara presents the lowdown on how you can improve the chances that your résumé will get read, by mastering the skills required to ensure that the right person gets both to see, and to respond positively, to your job application. He rounds out his discussion by indicating how you can best use your newfound tool of a cutting-edge résumé to overcome any hurdles that might lie in the way of you securing your dreamed-of position.

From the commonplace to the exceptional, Tony Beshara leads the way. By firmly grasping this opportunity to excel, you will be empowered to soar above your peers and to attain those heights for which others might only long. Helpful resource, especially for someone creating a résumé for the very first time, or refreshing a previously created one. I found the information both practical and accessible, and used it effectively to create my own document.

I am extremely picky about resume books, and I had my doubts about this one. Dr. Phil McGraw writing the forward wasn’t a selling point for me, but Tony Beshara was a guest on his show, so at least there’s a reasonable connection there. The other thing that kind of scared me was Beshara’s insistence that what he presented in the book is the “truth” about resumes. Thank goodness he didn’t write it as Truth with a capital T. I think I would have stopped reading right there.

Overall, Beshara’s book contains a lot of sound advice for job seekers on how to write a resume as well as how to use a resume in the job search. Beshara bases his suggestions on questionnaires he has sent to hiring managers and recruiters as well as his own experience as a recruiter. He also tapped the expertise of other established career management professionals including Joyce Layne Kennedy and Kathryn K. Troutman.

Beshara covers a range of resume types and appropriate conventions for each including resumes for new graduates, former military personnel entering the civilian workforce, healthcare careers, Information Technology careers, and academia. In addition to covering the conventions of marketing yourself in various professions, Beshara also addresses common concerns job seekers may have about re-entering the workforce after an extended absence, job hopping, etc.

I also appreciated his honesty in response to all the hoopla about video resumes being the future and social media being the magic bullet for troubleshooting a job search.

In a nutshell: I know the advice in this book is good because it’s the same advice I frequently give my clients. A lot of it is often stuff that they aren’t interested in hearing, but for candidates seriously interested in learning about what it takes to get a job, this is an excellent resource.

This is a fabulous book. If you are looking for a job in this crowded market, this is one resource to have by your side. I was impressed by the content, the tone, the numerous examples, and how realistic, but positive, Beshara is about searching for employment.

When I was a hiring manager, the format of a résumé was just as crucial as the content. You're forced to make decisions on who to call in for an interview based upon one sheet of paper that is supposed to highlight a person's entire work history. Sometimes there's a well-written cover letter to go with it. Sometimes you're judging by the résumé alone. The tips in Unbeatable Résumés would have made a difference to me.. They are the simple little things that make you stand out in a sea of applicants. Following that up with Beshara's tips on how to get results, could make a difference for you and your job search.

Highly recommended!

I read this as part of a career-books-from-the-library blitz. It's not bad, but it's definitely a library-only book for me--some advice is questionable (read: too pushy), and the content itself is limited.

By limited, I mean that pages 41 to 249 (of 324 pages) consist of industry-specific resume samples. In other words, unless you have an extraordinarily diverse working background, only 1/3rd of the book's content will apply to you.

I really like the introduction. I thought it gave a good overview of how realistically difficult it is to find a new job. It scared me enough that I wanted to rewrite my resume again. I definitely like the list of different examples of resumes. The networking, initiating contact to the hiring authorities, and sending resumes techniques were very daunting though. This is definitely a recommended read for someone who seems lost on where to start with resumes and finding work again.

I will say that there are useful parts to this book, but once I got beyond all the resume examples, I was bored, uninterested and hesitant with the information provided. I'm sure Tony knows why he's doing--he mentioned no less than a handful of time in a chapter he's been doing this since the 1970s, but I'm not sure some of his practices are applicable today or for my preferred industry.

Overall, felt meh when I was done.

I read this book in conjunction with Beshar's "the Job Search Solution". This one was so much better! I thought it had tactile information that I could use in my own resume, helpful advice on how to attain a better, more readable and approachable resume that's made for success. If you need a resume book this one fits the bill

Very practical...well organized...easily read...accessible actionable tips...government resume/application section is very helpful. Used this book as a central reference for a workshop delivered on "Writing Winning Resumes". Worthy reference.

This book has helped me to think about my resume differently than before, and I hope it will help. I plan on giving it a rating after I finish rewriting my resume(s). Then I will see how many bites I get!

Great book with lots of insight. My only issue is it was 50% different from what they told us in TAP. For Army speak that means they got 50% right?
