My newest PRIZE!!!
Oh my goodness! I started Trim Healthy Mama, "way back when" - and have been following the principles laid out in the original book for 27 months. As a middle-aged (yes, I admit it) mama of four, with 3 decades spent overweight and then obese, having tried every "fad diet" out there; suffering hypothyroidism, chronic fatigue, chronic pain, and unable to even walk up a flight of stairs without wheezing... I was desperate, hopeless and utterly defeated. Skeptical, at very best, I purchased the original book and 'devoured" all 640 pages! WHEW!

I didn't find it confusing, just followed the steps and... at 43 years old, I feel better than I did in my early 20's. I easily lost 53 pounds, and have been able to maintain my newfound health with ease - while eating absolutely delicious meals and NEVER feeling deprived! I can hike, cross-country with a 40+ pound pack, and not only live to tell about it... I FEEL GOOD! I could go on and on, but you want to hear about THIS book!

Over the last couple years, I have spent countless (and I do mean COUNTLESS) hours on the THM facebook forums. Membership has literally exploded to well over 100,000 people, just in one group alone! Of these members, most enjoyed the original book... but many found the 600+ pages overwhelming - even though the book included 200 pages of recipes! Some members even had their books divided - to keep the recipe section separate from the "plan" part of the book.

The authors heard and responded to the plea for a more concise version, with an easier layout... as well as for a completely separate recipe book! While I feel a "loyalty" to my original, exceptionally PRIZED copy of Trim Healthy Mama, I did order both new books. I AM SOOOO GLAD I DID!

Just. WOW! They have completely outdone themselves here. Truly.

The "Trim Healthy Mama Plan - the easy-does-it approach to vibrant health & a slim waistline" is absolutely amazing. This isn't just a "revision", this spells out the plan, while complimenting the previous book! The information contained here is definitely more concise, the layout is (in my opinion) much better; I can see this will be an easier read for many folks, and while it is more concise, it also contains updated information - making it my newest prize!

I will say that I thought I would be replacing my original with this one and the new recipe book... but I could never give up the book that brought me "here". I have me a "collection"... Oh yeah!

Life Changer!
My wife says:

This book is a Life Changer! Photos are from left to right: 240, 190, 175, 160 and Goal

I bought the first edition in February 2013, I was 230 pounds and only 5'2. I was desperate for change after 15 years (all of my teens, twenties and some thirties) being 115 pounds overweight. I had tried calorie counting, weight watchers, slim fast and diet pills. All of which had some weight loss but I gained all of it back every time.

Trim Healthy Mama taught me *how* to eat for the first time! I no longer was worried that if I did take off all of the weight it would just come back on because right from the beginning they explained how to maintain your weight loss. I was so thankful to not have to calorie count for the rest of my life too!

I initially lost 8-10 pounds per month, after the first 50 pounds I lost 4-5 pounds per month. I lost 90 pounds in 10 1/2 months. Then I became pregnant, had a healthy pregnancy with a 24 pound weight gain and gave birth to a perfect baby girl (all while continuing on the plan during and after pregnancy). I lost the baby weight in 4 months and then lost the additional 15 pounds I had left until I reached my goal. Then I maintained my weight loss for several months (nearly effortlessly) and became pregnant again. I just gave birth to my son (also wonderfully healthy) and had a 23 pound weight gain. I'm thankful to know that I will be able to lose it again and maintain!

Trim Healthy Mama is more than hope, it's a life changer if you're ready!

This is why I love Trim Healthy Mama in a nutshell: It's easy, it works, it's enjoyable long term and it's healthy! It's now been over 3 years and there's no turning back for me!

I bought the new book at Christmas and have been reading it ever since. It so simply spells it all out. I was able to get through the basics of the plan in just 45 minutes, it was all laid out in the first few chapters! I love the meal and snack plans differentiated by specific circumstances. I love the information on superfoods and supplements. Many have been great additions to my diet and I never would have sought them out! Finally, the cookbook is wonderful. If it works for your finances it's a great addition too!

I prayed for years for a solution to my weight problem. God answered that prayer with Trim Healthy Mama!

The diet itself is a pretty simple concept
I bought this book on accident. I intended to buy the cookbook but read it anyway. Well tried to read it. I'm not gonna lie this book is hard to push through. The diet itself is a pretty simple concept. No calorie or macro counting. Your meals are split into 2 types, savory meals with healthy fats, protein and veggies or meals with lower glycemic carbs (eg sweet potatoe), lean protein and veggies. You can mix up meal types as you wish but unless you are in a maintenance phase or expecting/nursing or a child, carbs and fats should not be paired together in a meal except for in minimal amounts. No sugar or white flour is allowed but stevia is on plan and white potatoes discouraged until the maintenance phase. This is a diabetic friendly diet and seems nutritionally sound. The problem with this book is that it just goes on and on and on and there comes a time where you just want them to get to the point already. Because it's written in a conversational tone the endless mashup of personal religious beliefs, nutritional statistics, anecdotes, goofy names for plan food groups as well as lots of references to recipes but no actual recipes all got on my nerves pretty quick. The authors are encouraging and I love that they include a section on expecting and nursing moms but there's so much material here that the actual diet plan can get lost in the noise. These ladies have a lot to say.

I did buy the cookbook and there are some great looking recipes in there that I look forward to trying. There was an abbreviated recap but still longwinded explanation of the plan before the recipe section so that book is really all anyone would need to follow the plan. They also have a line of products you can purchase but arent necessary for the recipes. I don't have a problem with that but some may. If their baking mix helps produce a low carb bread that doesn't taste like crap I'd gladly buy it. Low carb cooking requires imagination and lots of trial and error so I appreciate anything that makes my life easier in that regard.

Bottom line is that I'd skip this book and go straight to the cookbook. I have no clue if their concept of separating fats and carbs is effective in and of itself but the plan focuses on low glycemic foods, healthy fats and an overall healthier approach to eating without having to count calories or points. Just wish the plan was presented in a more straight forward manner.

Useless without another purchase
I kept seeing THM recipes popping up on Pinterest, so I thought I'd check it out. After searching the web, I kept seeing positive success stories, but little detail of the plan.

I ordered this book to get the details & was ready to get some fresh ideas into my normal routine. I should have stopped at the recipes.

First, the authors seem like people I would avoid at all costs in real life. The chatter throughout is incredibly annoying. Kind of like the "Hey, gurl! I spread rumors about you in high school but buy my MLM junk!" vibe. It's all "golly gee whiz" silliness. It comes across as false, not informal and personal.

Then, the plan or lack thereof. There are pages and pages of multi-paragraph descriptions of ingredients. I'm pretty sure by now I can identify okra, coconut, and gelatin, thanks. I skipped ahead to the suggested meal plans. Great! Except that almost every suggestion is a recipe found in the THM cookbook - which must be bought separately. So, even if I could take the sorority chatter, made it past all the filler, and was ready to jump into a new way of eating...too bad - go buy another book.

Suggestion - don't advertise this as a complete plan when there isn't a single suggested day that doesn't require buying another book. It's greedy and misleading.

I'd suggest the original (not meal delivery) South Beach Diet for a sustainable WOE without the corniness & weird, expensive, and unnecessary ingredients of THM. Oh, and that SBD has all the recipes you need.

Amazing book, amazing lifestyle change.
IM 34 lbs down! I was told about this book by a friend. I joined their Facebook group and quickly found out I needed this book to get a basic understanding of what all the abbreviations were and what exactly each meal type was. At first it seemed ridiculously difficult to understand lol but it is seriously simple. The book is a shorter and more to the point book than their original first book but I think both versions are worth owning. If you are first starting out though, get this book first! I would also recommend both cook books and joining the Facebook group to really get the best from this plan.

It really is like a lifestyle change! My health has improved, I feel awesome, I’ve lost weight and my lab work is superb!

Book itself is well written, helpful and one of my favorites!

Book and Program review
KINDLE VERSION: The formatting is good and I love that I can highlight and bookmark important information. A paper copy would be nice, but this works better for my situation and doesn't take up much space. :-)

CONTENT: The book is fairly concise and does a good job detailing the plan and does not get bogged down.
*It includes a short story-type description of common backgrounds of people looking for options, which will help many relate to what they are doing right and wrong.
*The food plan basics are repeated throughout the book which may not be necessary but is VERY helpful in getting your mind around it.
*The principles are backed up with both science and Scripture to demonstrate the rationale and benefits.
*I love that there is a recap at the end of the book so the information is available in one place - no need to go "flipping pages" to find what you need.

THE PROGRAM: The principles of the program are common-sense, balanced, and easy to apply. There are no extremes and no guilt inflicted for mistakes. No calorie counting. The emphasis is on good health which, for many, includes weight loss.
While written from a Christian point-of-view, it certainly does not exclude people with other beliefs.

BOTTOM LINE: I was inspired by my daughter's 15 pound loss in two months and her better health to look into THM. I am just getting started, but find it is fairly easy to adjust to and my meals are healthier and taste good. My husband likes the food choices and will, hopefully, be completely on board with it soon. I have not purchased a cookbook yet, but have found some helpful recipes on Pinterest and on the Trim Healthy Mama website.

Great approach, but authors are long-winded, and no recipes included
I like the approach advocated for in the book and it does have a lot of flexibility in terms of the type of food consumer you are (or want to be). However, I was disappointed that it took so long for the authors to get to the points they were making. No recipes are in this book either, you must buy a separate cookbook for recipes (which I got about a month after receiving this book and have recommended the cookbook to friends). I do wish they covered more natural sugar alternatives, such as monk fruit, in this book, as I have sensitivities to stevia and such.

solid research
My friend gave me a copy of the old book and it was frustrating to read. The sisters seem to really value their personal banter, which was lost on me. This book was a lot easier to read and more organized. I enjoyed reading about their research on different items which I have incorporated into my family's diet. We don't exactly follow the THM way of eating, although what we do eat is pretty close. Understanding the different ways our body uses energy sources and such was fascinating. The beginning of the book was unnecessary, but I'm sure it was helpful for some people to understand the way they think in terms to food. Overall, it's another diet book, but more of a way of living after you get the hang of it. I do like that they promote a healthy lifestyle rather than limiting yourself foods just to lose weight. It reminds me of a less-trendy Keto diet that isn't afraid of carbs.

Nope. Their "Do the Doonk" YouTube video completely discredited any shrapnel of actual sound dietary advice. In the first couple chapters they admitted to being freed from vegan views because of scripture, but don't eat pork because scripture. I taken issue with claiming to be freed and enslaved over the same topic. Leave God out of your crazy. Eat some bacon and stop consuming so much stevia. Also, do your research on Weight Watchers before you slam them. I mean, they are actually backed by Nope. Egotistical.
Complicated.
Condescending. "Frankenfoods." Really? All of the THM products can be classified as inorganic.
Atkins did it first.
And, the editor (if there was one) should be fired. Way too many freaking exclamation points!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Definitely not a book that can be easily embraced by the American West coast. ...more

You talk too much - get to the point.
The "man chapter" doesn't even tell you how to do this thing. I read half the book and learned nothing - stop jabbering and get to the point.

A friend of mine raves about this plan and has lost quite a bit of weight by doing this, and so has her family. I read this and found it interesting. The authors make it very clear that they are not medical professionals, so I wasn't ever clear on how they came up with this plan with no scientific background. Some of the info given are things that have been said many times before -- portion control, no sugar, balance, etc. And then some of it is completely new....like not mixing your fuel A friend of mine raves about this plan and has lost quite a bit of weight by doing this, and so has her family. In the title it says, 'Keep it simple, Keep it sane.' And it is my best guess that they mean the food (keep it simple and sane--natural, whole, etc.), but this plan isn't all that simple. It takes some getting used to in order to construct the meals they suggest. And some of their suggestions and specific ingredients are available only online. I like that they direct you to their own website, as well as telling you what to "google" if you want to do some comparison shopping.

I enjoyed the 'don't stress' message and the authors seemed very personable.

Too much book for too little
I like the plan. I was very disappointed that there are no recipes in the book. They always refer to the cook book. If you don’t have it you are SOL. I hear there is another version that outlines the plan and gives recipes. I would get that one.

Its ok
Easy read, got this for a gift, and the book is ok. The on line group, they were rude to the person I purchased this for. Not happy with it over all. The book goes on and on -I want something that gets to the point. The other one does the same thing. They tell so many stories, and I just what the basic to the point information. maybe others like that style of writing, I do not.

I purchased the giant, 600+ page Trim Healthy Mama book when it first came out. I love the information and recipes but it does take some muscles to lug it out when you want to look something up!

I guess that was a common complaint which is why Pearl Barrett and Serene Allison now separated the book into two parts...the actual plan Trim Healthy Mama Plan and then a corresponding cookbook. The plan book breaks down this lifestyle, which is not a diet. Unlike fad diets, this plan is not difficult. I purchased the giant, 600+ page Trim Healthy Mama book when it first came out. The plan book breaks down this lifestyle, which is not a diet. Unlike fad diets, this plan is not difficult. You will focus on refueling your body every three to four hours by focusing on one primary fuel at a time. The plan book includes a menu mock-up, affordable superfoods, what to eat when you are out and about or super busy, and so much more. It truly is a 300 page guide book.

While I have the huge book myself, I would totally recommend the two separate books for anyone looking to purchase them now as it makes reading about the plan, and then cooking the recipes, so much easier.

This book was sent to my Blogging for Books in exchange for my honest review. ...more

This book basically taught how to avoid spiking my blood sugar. I love that to practice this diet there is no elimination of any food groups and I have even found a way to stop drinking Dr. Pepper. It's only been about a couple weeks since I've started reading this book but I have already lost 3 pounds. Learning how to tweak your recipes and eliminate sugar has been awesome. I recommend reading this book and giving yourself some time with it because there is a learning curve to it.

FYI: this is NOT a cookbook
So, bought this thinking it was cookbook number 2.
It is not.
It’s a whole lot of back & forth commentary about why you should / should not have various food items.
Followed by menus / meal plans that refer to recipes found in cookbook number 1.
And in order to understand the jargon of their meal plans, you have to read this book, from the beginning.
(Evidently, most of the info on their meal plans can actually be found in cookbook number 1 as well.)
Personally, I just wanted the dang cookbook.

Doesnt get to the point and doesnt simply break down the plan as to how to do it
I have read A LOT of diet and lifestyle plans. This has got to be the most difficult to understand and takes a very long and boring way of trying to describe it. Not seeing any just simply “heres how you break it down” pages. Poorly written and the measurements of food is just idiotic “a doonk” what the H. Just please break it down in a one- 3 page version SOMEWHERE in the book. I will say the cookbook that is seperate has great recipes. And the meal plans in this book are nice. I am seriously aggrivated though about how difficult they made this plan in the book.

Feels like an MLM
This diet plan (or “health journey” or “lifestyle...” whatever word you want to use in place of diet) was recommended to me as something it was not.

I joined a Facebook group with over 200k followers to try to figure out what this was all about before I bought the books that I’d need to learn.

It felt very much like an MLM to me. If you ask sincere questions that could, in any way be perceived as coming from a critically-thinking person who is trying to find out if the program is for them or not, you are immediately met with a barrage of defensive women who are overly-positive about the diet. I saw several women post that they are suddenly having high blood pressure issues. Immediately afterward, someone else posted about how low their blood pressure was. It felt disingenuous and I had alarms and red flags going off in my head.

Any group that does not allow honest questions without gaslighting or responding defensively, scares me. It feels like a cult and it isn’t for me. If it is something you like, more power to you.
