Reviews for The Piercing Bible: The Definitive Guide to Safe Body Piercing:

Three stars or 4.5?
I've seen this industry and Elaine Angels' career develop since the late 80's and I was Gauntlet NYC's second customer (Elaine Angel told me so after she sold me a threaded ball, which was also what the first customer bought).

This book is a good value for $20 but after looking through it I feel that Mrs. Angel could have added a lot more from her lengthy career but chose not to, seemingly to prevent this book from being too thick (and expensive) and of much use to those who would seek it out as an alternative to a formal apprenticeship. I was asked to review this book elsewhere and based on my knowledge gave it three stars (out of 5) but also gave it a public (for non-professionals) rating of 4.5 stars which is near what the ratings system here gives it.

For those seeking how to pierce information in book form I still recommend the Gauntlet training manual (out of print, ask around for a copy from other piercers).

Also of great interest to the APP and piercing professions is "Body Art: A Model Code And Comprehensive Guidebook" published by the National Environmental Health Association. With a letter of endorsement from the APP on page 337- but the APP keeps forgetting about this book, which makes them appear disingenuous to the profession. (Elaine Angel is an APP member). "The Piercing Bible" suffers from a lack of input from outside the APP cult of self-endorsement.

First the APP claimed that their own procedure manual was the only such book even though the NEHA book and Gauntlet book were better, and under piercing procedures the instructions were that you'd learn by doing it! And now are claiming that "The Piercing Bible" is the only such book- which is a blatant lie when their "fingerprints" are all over the much better National Environmental Health Association book which was intended to influence health departments and not publicly talked about by APP members or offered by sale by the APP or to APP members.

From the APP web site about "The Piercing Bible", "The APP is now offering the first and only comprehensive and authoritative book exclusively on the subject of body piercing" -APP (The Association of Professional Piercers), which is ignoring that the piercing Bible does not teach how to pierce and that the Gauntlet Training manual did! By my count "The Piercing Bible" is the third comprehensive book on the subject (not counting the APP procedure manual) My own effort "The Body Piercing Encyclopedia Volume 1 tools" also missed the mark because although it's authoritative was not comprehensive because the first 330+ page volume only covered tools, and the second volume (on procedures) was never written (or yet to be written?). I am a fully certified body artist and have been since 2002. Many other professionals in the field share the opinions I'm expressing, and without their cooperation this review would not have been possible.

"The Piercing Bible" passes on a few unsupported myths about piercing tools and aftercare that novices have asked me about, which I can't defend, and that the industry does not support, but the book has lots of gems as well. There are a lot of useful insights in "The Piercing Bible" but just like the religious Bibles you can only take it all literally at your own risk.

From the earliest days of modern piercing there have been "authorities" making facts up and trying to re-write history to suit personal vested interests, and for that we all suffer; but once you understand the truth of this (or don't know the truth) "The Piercing Bible" goes from my three star rating up to 4.5 stars. To earn five stars it would have to include piercing procedures and drop it's new age faith-based medical claims.

Great book for someone interested or a professional
Really enjoyed this book.

As someone with many piercings (50+) over my life, and a few I've done myself, I wanted to hear a masters perspective. She is definitely a master piercer. She knows a lot about placement and jewelry selection, but her knowledge of medicine is a bit less--perhaps some assistance from a medical professional (maybe a wound care specialist) would be helpful here.

I think her bits on nipples and genitals are obviously the best, since that's her specific specialty.

An update, with another author who specializes in other parts of the body, would probably make this great book even better!

A must read, or at least a must have, if you have any interst in body mods/piercings; or even if you have a loved one with an interest in that culture. Very informative and nicely written.

I bought this so that I could start learning proper ...
I bought this so that I could start learning proper piercing technique to hopefully eventually pierce in my husband's tattoo shop. I was sort of wary about this book, but there was no reason to be. Ms. Angel knows her stuff, and her techniques are outlined very well, and she makes sure to put in warnings that sometimes you wouldn't think of. As a nurse, I appreciated that. If you want to learn to pierce, or you just want a new piercing yourself, I suggest reading this book.

The Best Book Ever Written About the Art of Safe Body Piercing
Amazon just contacted me again and asked if I'd review Elayne Angel's Piercing Masterpiece. I thought I already had. If you've already read my first review, please enjoy this one. The Piercing Bible: The Definitive Guide to Safe Body Piercing is THE book to read if you're interested in Body Piercing in any way, shape, or form. Elayne's years of experience not only make her the foremost expert in the field of safe body piercing, but honestly the most qualified person to attempt a work like this. The book is complete, takes all facets of the art into consideration and if you had any questions at all -- they will be thoughtfully answered within the pages of her book. On a scale of 1 to 10 . . . It's a 10!

Probably will never actually read all of this. I just never have and never will be able to stand the author. Too high and mighty and super condescending.

added 11/29/2014:

Rollllllling my eyes, hardcore Liz Lemon style, because I should have added to my review my prediction of the author commenting on my bad review because the fact that I've seen her do this to other people is part of the reason she just rubs me the wrong way. It is creepy and I should be able to leave my review and that's it. Probably will never actually read all of this. I just never have and never will be able to stand the author. First of all, no one is more qualified than Elayne Angel to write a definitive guide to safe body piercing. She is a master piercer and a legend to the industry. This book is a must-read for piercing enthusiasts, people thinking about getting pierced for the first time, and most importantly, people in the medical/dental professions. I cannot tell you how un-informed so called "professionals" are about body piercing. This book could change the medical & modified world and hopefully it will!

This book is thorough, detailed, thoughtful, and full of anything you ever wanted to know about piercing, and some stuff you didn't want to know! I highly recommend this if you are planning on ANY piercing.

This book is an absolute great tread for anyone that cares about body modification. You'll learn what to look for and how to keep yourself from getting duped by a piercing "salesman."

Good informative book.
My book was delivered earlier and I have already read quite a bit of it. I will say it's worth the money. That being said this is not a training manual for new piercers. However it is every informative regarding procedures for sterile work practices, types of piercings, tools used, proper gauges for specific piercings, placements for various piercings, aftercare as well as some words of warning of things to avoid. This book can be a very useful tool for new piercers to guide them in the right direction.

Great Book Written By Great Piercer
Love all the extra info she threw in that was super helpful. My only complaint is that a few of the piercings listed in there, the part that says procedure it just explains what it is, not how to do it. So when I was asked for those ones, I had to turn people down because I didn't know what I had to do. Even tho, I'm apprenticing, I haven't gotten to a whole lotta stuff yet. So I was slightly frustrated that I couldn't even study up on those few things

Again should only be sold to pros
Definitely should only be sold to professionals in my opinion Again should only be sold to professionals in my opinion we have kids out here asking for piercing kids when we get phone calls at the shop like what in the world

Great book on piercing
Great book on piercing. Most of the information is geared towards piercees then piercers, but it is also a valuable resource for piercers. I have made it required reading for anyone that is apprenticing under me.

This book is in no way a substitute for an actual apprenticeship under an experienced knowledgeable piercer.

If You Are Considering Piercing, A Must Have
I ordered this book from Amazon after hearing a great deal about it. I currently have 5, soon to be 6 piercings & 2 tats. I learned about this book after doing research on different types of piercings and it is amazing. She gives in depth descriptions on everything from simple ear piercings to the more exotic ones.
Terrific info on what to expect before, during and after piercings, transdermals, implants, etc. The best way to care for your piercings to the best jewelry to select. This book has truly eased my nerves a bit and has taught me a few things as well. Even people who don't understand/get "the piercing thing" should read this. Highly recommended!

I thought this book was great. It contains a lot of helpful information, and I found it incredibly helpful in dealing with a few issues with several of my piercings. I know there are people who might disagree with some of the information in this book, but the truth is that everyone has a different opinion and because we are talking about the way peoples bodies react to/heal piercings, of course it won't be universal. Personally though, I thought it was great :)

Unbelievable
People would sue if a doctor put a piece of metal in their body for no legitimate medical reason. Yet they pay some non-healthcare professional to do it? On purpose!

Crazy. End of discussion

Piercing - actually amateur, and untrained acupuncturists
Please note the ONE MD's VERY equivocal "endorsement": the practice needs more standards for safety, etc nationwide....
not exactly a ringing endorsement....of dangerous and NOT medically necessary in any sense - PLAY ...let's call a spade a spade.....

Please note especially the author's own disclaimers and recommendations.
There is no substitute for structured, scientific study, i.e., acupuncture,
in an appropriate setting. As the author herself says "This is not an instructional manual....."

A chapter on Acupuncture would be advisable. The author ought to consider the implications of acupuncture, and its relation to "play piercing". I doubt that she has even opened a single book re acupuncture, or even been to an acupuncturist even once.

Would you rather pay $80-100+ for a very well-trained and safe professional, or
$200/hr+ for someone w/o training, certification, continuing eduction, anatomical knowledge, w/o a professional demeanor (they won't insult you or assume that you are masochistic "scum:...) Ponder it, dear reader.

It is simply a dangerous form of "play"..... There are no clinical studies, or probably even a single nonpartisan clinical study endorsing piercing for play. There is ONLY anecdotal commentary in this book. The publisher out to be sanctioned.

The inescapable fact remains: NOT A SINGLE MD OR PROFESSIONAL PIERCER IN THE EASTERN TRADITION: AN ACUPUNCTURIST
-- will look favorably upon the idea of "piercing" by non-professionals or one untrained in acupuncture.

You can have any number of the author's friends, and the publisher, and _their_ friends GUSH about "piercing". But common sense alone suggests that it should only be done by rigorously trained MDs or LAc s.... No number of clinical psychs or family counselors or those who have experienced it and escaped harm (they think) makes the process safe, when not carried out by MDs or an Acupuncturist....

One might ask, what does she have against them? That is perhaps the most important question. I believe it is all about "play" per se, and one's right to play dangerously if desired. I, nor any reasonable person will contest that, except in conservative states.... If you want to PLAY dangerously, then simply admit it, and proceed. But one should be properly disgusted when clinical evidence such ass MRI's show the scarrring, possible loss of functionality in any skin or organ pierced, or unintended bleeding occurs. (As even happens with trained MDs or partially-trained Acupunctiurists in my experience. Where does one go when a "piercer" makss a mistake due to a lack of anatomical or other medical training? The Emergency Room.

Is there a single MD in the United States, who has an active practice, willing to endorse "piercing"? The reasons are not addressed by the author.

After being treated very successfully for unwanted Arthritis pain by producing ENDORPHINS the right way! by a trained (8 years) and experienced - another 8 years+ - and - being someone who is addicted to endorphins - especially when induced by someone else! --- I am VERY VERY skeptical of anyone playing with needles except acupuncturists! The mere concept that it can be done safely otherwise, is incomprehensible!!!!

Playing with someone who is not an acupuncturist, creates the strong likelihood of internal scarring, and loss of function in the organ or skin that is punctured. Clinically proven.

I urge anyone contemplating needle play, to first try some treatments by a REAL acupuncturist, and ASK their opinion of SM play - do yourself a favor!!!

I recently was treated also by an acupuncturist "intern" with FIVE years of training. She was completely incompetent. in several regards. I wrote her Dean about all the mistakes. It is a LONG learning curve, not exactly comparable to what pro doms will attempt after a few hours of play.....

SM needle play is very analogous to asking a 1st year medical student to do
a hip replacement, or brain surgery!

Acupuncturists know the entire body and appropriate points for the needles. There are MANY more places to insert needles than you may imagine, AND, they will actually BENEFIT some organ, function, or ALLEVIATE some affliction!

There is virtually NO recovery time from any acupuncture treatments. What I have noticed is that flood of endorphins often occur anywhere from a few hours to 4-5 hours after the treatment, and the endorphin high, or relief from unwanted pain may last a week or more!

More Details:
A skilled acupuncturist, working with someone with a high pain threshold like me,
can place the needles in, quite deeply, esp if there is a lot of muscle mass.....
and do so with almost with NO sensation. However, MANY if not MOST people
are quite sensitive to the needle entering, and you may experience pain.
The acupuncturist can ELIMINATE such pain, or KEEP it, or INCREASE it.
It is your choice! Also, they can then MOVE the needles - as desired -- to create STRONG sensations! (All with NO blood.). Blood is considered a LAST resort by the most experienced acupuncturists, who can produce all the desired endorphins very safely.

Minor addendum... very good, experienced, skilled acupuncturists, are available
all over almost any metropolitan area in the US for 40-$65/hr, depending on your income. In the SF Bay area, Esp. in the Santa Cruz area and Chinatown. Try mentioning THOSE levels of compensation to a would-be pro dom who is willing to "try" some piercing... ha!

Note, one can choose either a male or female REAL acupuncturist, as desired, as well..

Oh, other advantages of using an acupuncturist rather than a pro dom:
- you are treated as a valued client, and as an adult - not exactly common practice among pro doms, eh?

- they don't speak to you as if they think that you are scum, or EVER speak demeaningly, or call you a "worm" - a common expression among doms....

- you should still always be polite - however - an acupuncturist will actually APPRECIATE that! Many doms do not even let you communicate at all once play
has started, except to END the play...)

- you should be clean - that should be in the realm of common sense.

- they will actually COMMUNICATE with you before, during, and after a treatment.... try that with a a pro dom!!!

Moreover, acupuncturists sometimes use electricity, usually a medical TENS unit, on the desired area, for the healing effects of heat generated. Acupuncturists will, never, ever, use electricity unsafely, and will never, ever, produce electrical BURNS - which are common among those who play with piercing, i.e., pro doms, who don't understand what they are doing.....and learning on the job....

For the best CLINICAL results from piercing play - the production of endorphins - enormously beneficial for virtually all human systems, acupuncture wins hands-down over piercing and some other piercing play activities.

And, not surprisingly, acupuncturists actually ENJOY what they do, close to 100% of the time. I do not believe pro doms can claim but a fraction of comparable satisfaction. Bad scenes are VERY common in SM play, they are VERY rare indeed, with acupuncture.....

SM Players who pierce, simply cannot ignore the clinical, scientific, and psychological
dangers. All the accounts of satisfactory SM play will simply not stand if the sub compares that or any "piercing" by non-professional medical practitioners or acupuncturists.

Good for a bookshelf conversation piece not much else.
I read this book from cover to cover. I thought this was going to be a book about piercing placement and procedure. It turned out to be more of a autobiography of the author. Not to mention their long winded feelings about the field of body piercing. There is some instructions about piercing, placement, also procedure but it lacks pictures and the vague descriptions leave much to be desired.

not very useful
Not what I expected. I was expecting more of a guide on how to do piercings. I found very little useful information and it was all so boring that I could barely read it, and this is coming from someone who has done 20 piercings on myself and loves piercings. This is more of a novice guide for people who are thinking about getting piercings, not a guide for professional piercers.
