This National Geographic guide to healing foods and natural,
herbal, home remedies is carefully researched by the authors and
conveyed in the same friendly and authoritative personality as in their
popular call-in radio show. In the book, organized as Q&As between
the general public and the Graedons, they report how and why such
treatments work and also offer a dozen new recipes for food so good for
you, it serves as preventive medicine. This book contains as much
information as a voluminous encyclopedia of home remedies, yet it's
quick, easy, inviting, and fun to read.
Presented
alphabetically by ailment and then, within each of those, by food or
remedy, the book offers the basics of three standard diets for health,
weight control, and fitness, along with a dozen new recipes for
preparing food to match the diets. It includes a helpful index and
cross-referencing system, making the book both a good shelf reference
and an entertaining browse.
This book builds on the
reputation of The People's Pharmacy and adds the extra value that comes
from a partnership with National Geographic.

I've enjoyed 'The People's Pharmacy' from time to time while traveling (my local NPR station does not carry it), and so was interested in this book. Avoid it!Aug 31, 2017
Lots of great home remedies in this book from husband-and-wife pharmacists. I also liked the list of 24 favorite foods that we can eat on a daily basis to improve our health in different ways. The book is written in a question and answer format using letters and suggestions from their readers. Some of the home remedies they can validate with scientific studies and some they can't, but I guess they share all of them because science hasn't uncovered everything and it might help someone. I like their motto "If it might help, won't hurt, and doesn't cost too much, it's worth considering." I've already had success reducing acid reflux/heartburn by chewing sugarless gum after meals, which is in this book as well as their previous home remedy book. ...moreOct 03, 2017
some good advice in here but not enough info on the true and tried remedies or recipes for the remedies .Oct 21, 2011
I have been enjoying this book.Jan 27, 2013
For some common ailments, this book has a lot of easy remedies that you can probably find in your kitchen -or bathroom cupboard - a bar of soap under the bottom sheet for leg cramps was especially intriguing. Joe and Terry Graedon have explanations for some of the remedies, and some of the tried remedies and their results are baffling, but are perhaps worth a try! This is a fun and easy-to-read book, containing some remedies, some beneficial foods, a couple diets, and a few recipes.Nov 11, 2011
This is a very practical book. There's nothing fancy in these pages, since it's mostly a distillation of items from Joe and Terry Graedon's backlog of collected wisdom on topics of health and diet. From a single read-through, I've already picked up several remedies that are already working for me, since this volume is one purchase I certainly don't regret!Sep 23, 2011
Picked up book after hearing an interview on Bob Edwards' Weekend radio show. Interesting tips on how to inexpensivaly treat various aliments. I have tried a few in the past and am likely to try more in the future.Oct 21, 2011
