Martin Luther was one of the most influential men of the last
millennium, and the man most responsible for the Reformation that split
the Catholic Church in the 16th century.
A German theologian,
Luther wrote at length criticizing the Church and sparked the
Reformation, all while being one of the most read authors on the
continent in his lifetime. His teachings included important departures
from Church dogma, including the claim that absolution of sin could not
be purchased. Today his 95 Theses are among the most famous works
in the world.

Really good book that explains the basics all Christians need to know and seldom take for granted. Luther takes great pains to explain the basics in sufficient detail and clarity, the only part that i can say sort of lost me was the part on baptism but after reading through it the second time around I was all good.

Great Clarity from the book and the glory must go to God alone who used the man.

This is an excellent book to read along with the Bible. Luther really goes in depth into the Ten Commandments, the Lord's Prayer and the Creed, as well as the meaning behind the Sacraments. Definitely helps to foster a deeper understanding. Will definitely read multiple times.

This is an excellent primer for all Christians on the basic supplements to Christian thought and practice. Found within are commentaries to the ten commandments, the apostles' creed, and the sacrements of Baptism and Eucharist. I've read all sorts of adult catechism material but somehow missed this one. I'd love to see an updated version, i.e. Eugene Peterson reworks Luther's Large Catechism.

Worth reading regularly. I love Luther's forthrightness. Very helpful and explains the Christian Faith and life in such a way that warms my heart. Thank the Lord for Dr. Luther.

I enjoy Luther's leaving the mysteries of faith open to mystery. I sometimes have the impression that theologians want to clarify every piece of doctrine. However, Luther does a nice job of deferring to others or simply confessing "That's above my pay grade." Now, I think he gets a little bogged down in his rebuttals to the Roman church [yes, I understand the historical context], so he appears to lose track of his point through the forest of attacks on Rome. Unsurprisingly, this work is a lengthier take on Luthers Small Catechism, discussing the Ten Commandments, Apostles Creed, the Lords Prayer, and the sacraments of baptism and communion. Although this work elucidated Luthers thinking on these topics helpfully, the work as a whole was not substantially more beneficial to read than his small catechism. After reading Metaxes biography of Luther, I wanted to read some of Luthers writing. This one did not disappoint. While some of this book is written against the corruption of his day, I love the simplicity of Luthers writing and how he spells out what he considers to be the five foundations of our faith: the Ten Commandments, the apostles creed, the Lords Prayer, baptism, and communion. I listened to this on LibriVox and found it very edifying. It expounds on Luther's Small Catechism and fills in with further definition of the chief parts of the faith and what parents should teach their children.

I should read more Luther.

The editorial comments are not always helpful.

Very thorough. The parts a reader would like are highly correlated with their theological persuasions. That being said, my favorite sections were on baptism, communion, and "Thy Kingdom Come".

The work of Martin Luther is excellent. The translation and notes are, however, a real hoot.
