Christian focused devotional disguised as self help meditations.
Ugh please update to a religion free version. I would return it but I edited it myself. Very exclusive. I’m sad that the only literature out there on these topics are seem to be very Christian based. When I look at it, I see it’s bc they were written in the 80’s. If anyone knows about more recent, religion free, psychology books on codependency please suggest.
I don’t understand how a meditation book on codependency can freely suggest a replacement attachment figure? Isn’t the whole goal of recovering from codependency to attach to yourself? So why are you promoting attachment to a God? Seems counterproductive and I’m sad I spent money on this book. The Calm app is way better.

Only for devout Christians, not for those who want to take responsibility for their healing
Writings are all about putting your faith in God that he will do a lot of the work and not taking full responsibility for your own healing. If you are not a devout Christian, then this book will not help you much. Almost every entry involves leaving some of the actions that need to be taken to God's will. May not be for everyone.

Most recommended book to clients
I have recommended this book to most of my female clients over the past 15 years. It has been extremely helpful as a daily reminder around learning to and staying out of the business of others, allowing others to make choices and handle the consequences. Yes, it is written with the 12 Step Program in mind, but that doesn't get in the way of the truth of each page. A reader doesn't need to be involved in 12 Step to get the wonderful benefits.

A must read
This book is extremely helpful for anyone in a co-dependent relationship, or any situation where personal boundaries are difficult to maintain. It helped me enormously be reinforcing that I do have the right to draw boundaries, even with people I want to be close to.

I love this book, ease and peaceful.
I love this book. I love Melody's style. It makes me feel ease and peaceful. Her words touches me, she let me know I am important and I should take good care of myself. Growing up in a always emotional chaotic family with constant daily drama. I didn't realize how bad it was until few years ago. It was hard to come around at this stage of my life. I need a book like this one to make me feel good about myself, to really love myself and live a life just for myself. ......

One of my favorite books!
I have read this book twice so far and plan on reading it again in th future. This book is educational and the writer has excellent insight into the human mind. I recommend reading this book especially if you have trouble accepting reality and are aware of your problem. When I say reality, I mean, for example you keep getting upset and angry because a certain person keeps treating you a certain way- this book helps you to understand that you need to accept who that person is and stop trying to change it or fighting the facts-that person is who they are and you are who you are.

Great gift for women in recovery or anyone who struggles with codependency!
This book was a game changer for me many years ago. I love that it’s a daily read so it’s easy to stay focused and really challenge yourself to apply the daily concept. I have purchased this for many women and also recommend it to my clients. At any given time I have multiple copies on hand because I’m always running into someone who needs to hear the wise, comforting words this book contains! This book will not disappoint!!!

Are you a sucker in relationships? Do you say YES when you mean HELL NO? Do you give in too quickly, make concessions, or end up passive-agressively sucker punching someone psychologically because you're afraid if you tell the truth, stick up for yourself, or express your needs you won't have any friends or lovers?

Read this book.

I love this classic book by Melody Beattie
I love this classic book by Melody Beattie, but the publisher has done it a real disservice by printing this cheap, print-on-demand version. The paper quality is poor and the type is blurry. I returned the copy I ordered to Amazon and am going to shop for a used version of the original, much higher-quality edition.

Reading date: Ongoing.

I'm not much of a self-help type of person... but this one is an exception. This book is a journal, if you will, of daily thoughts. Schedule 15 minutes each morning to read a selection and write some notes about how it may affect your world and your life. You'll be surprised at the insights you have and the changes you can make in Your World.

There are chapters with " words of wisdom " many would fine beneficial as they navigate the world as we know ...
Helpful for a variety of people not just individuals recovering from an addiction. I started reading this book to support a friend in recovery from alcohol . I realized the information is beneficial for so many others in our American society, especially those who have or are currently being ostracized, bullied , not following some of the superficial norms of society, those who have lost parents in their youth and/or not received basic guidelines in youth. There are chapters with " words of wisdom " many would fine beneficial as they navigate the world as we know it.

This book was recommended to me for various and sundry reasons
This book was recommended to me for various and sundry reasons, which would be why I didn't know anything about the author or her style. The meditations are good, but unfortunately, they tend to close with overly God-y thoughts and prayers; If that's your thing, this should help. If on the other hand you're a godless agnostipagan like I am, you may find this difficult to take seriously, and end up paperbackswapping it away.

Letting Go
I've been very surprised and happy to read this. I began to read this for the context of the cover and soon began to realize that it was more about me letting go of me.. and not other things or persons. It's a daily reader and very inspiring.

This book is definitely a must read for everybody. In life we all experience set backs, trauma, or the unexpected and this book is a guide to help cope through these encounters.

Eh
It's a very nice "feeling" book both in weight & texture of the cover. I didn't expect Christianity to be involved, however, so was disappointed that all the days I read so far include God. Also, I feel that starting near the end (because I didn't buy it on January 1) I feel I am missing context from previous days.

I first met Melody Beattie at about the time that I became acquainted with John Bradshaw and all of the others who had it figured out when it comes to forgiveness and acceptance. I carried a ratty copy of "The Language of Letting Go" with me everywhere I went for many years before I passed it on to a dear friend.

What I learned? Hmmm...to let go and let God run things. The whole thing about me having any control over the big picture was just something that I held onto for way too long. This is the book that propelled me out of a depression many years ago. A special friend encouraged me to write a response to each of the daily meditations, and I learned a lot about myself by the end of the first year, most importantly how to protect love from helplessness. I have been blessed with four copies of this book. And each one eventually journeys into the hands of someone, who like me, struggles to let go. Given to me by my future mother-in-law, I have found so much solace in this book. Suffering from anxiety and panic disorder, I find this book often can provide my relief in these times, in some crazy way. It's been a blessing with every passage. Not every passage applies to me, but I always take a lesson from each day's motivation.

This book has a thought, a meditation, for every day of the year. It is an excellent 12 step resource, a resourceful tool for those finding themselves 'stuck' in codependent relationships, and for everyone else it is a simple reminder that problems are made to be solved. I have been reading this every day for two years and I am a happier healthier person because of it.

It's okay to detach. It's okay to be healthy and whole when a family member or friend isn't. It's okay to be gentle with yourself. Look around. Realize that you are working so hard to force the outcome of everything around you, to control your life, that you are working against yourself. It's okay to let things happen. Own your power - when you are handed drama that doesn't need to belong to you, hand it back!

I can't say enough about this book. Don't go to therapy. Buy this book! I promise it will help you realize the unhealthy habits you have grown up with and it will teach you how to change them. This book was given to me during a very difficult time in my life. My copy is tagged with countless page markers and is worn from reading it again and again. It is wrong to put this book in the bookshelf "read", because it's permanent currently-reading book for me. It was recommended to me in a self-help group for depression and since then I try to read the daily meditation as often as I can. It gives me a lot of courage, self-confidence and inspiration for the daily struggle. Highly recommended.

Would be good without god refrences
This book could have potential, but the author loses me everytime when she refers to god or somehow brings god into the process. If you cannot explain your point without god you have no value to me.

My copy doesn't look like the one listed
My copy doesn't look like the one listed, so I assume it's just an older copy. This one is not one of my favorites. Love the author and some of her other books. This one just didn't float my boat.

Great tools and devotions
I’ve read this book every day for over a year. Great tools and devotions..not just for the “co dependents”...great tools for anyone. I will say there are some editing errors but I am an English major so maybe I’m more sensitive to those sorts of things.
