Nick Carraway’s mysterious neighbour Gatsby gazes across the
dark bay at a distant green light. As the summer unfolds, Nick is drawn
into Gatsby’s world of luxury cars, speedboats and extravagant parties.
But the more he hears about Gatsby – even from what Gatsby himself tells
him – the less he seems to believe. Did he really go to Oxford
University? Was Gatsby a hero in the war? Did he once kill a man? Nick
recalls how he comes to know Gatsby and how he also enters the world of
his cousin Daisy and her wealthy husband Tom. Does their money make them
any happier? Do the stories all connect? Shall we come to know the real
Gatsby after reading Nick’s account of that fateful summer?

This review is about this version of the book, not the story itself. This is a "bootleg" version of the book, not an authentic publication. The cover has a poor quality picture (as evidenced by the visible pixels) and the book itself is typed in a different font than the publisher intended. I purchased this book for my son's high school english class and we had to get a different copy as this version has NO publication information. NO copyright information. Students are required to cite that information and this book doesn't even have a page for this information. Had I known, I would have purchased a different version. Unfortunately, the class didn't start reading the book until after my return window had closed or it would have gone back for sure.

Confused
This is a classic! I know that because I've been told that for decades. It's a good thing someone told me, because I'd never have guess it from reading it.

I thought it was a somewhat interesting description of the amorality of a small group of the very rich. Ho-hum. Maybe it was original at the time it was written, but the theme has been pretty well worn out now.

Should everyone read it? Sure, why not? But don't expect any great enlightenment or anything you haven't read a dozen times before.

Meandering, with a weak plot.
As an English teacher, disliking Gatsby is almost as controversial is lambasting Shakespeare, but I have never been able to discern exactly what others see in this particular novel. Fitzgerald has written some of my favorite stories and created some of my favorite characters. The Great Gatsby, though, features neither an engaging plot nor characters that make me care about them. Sure, there's a lot of symbolism, and I appreciate Fitzgerald's take on consumer debt society, but in terms of actual readability I find this novel annoyingly inane.

Fantastic writing!
Well.. it took me a few chapters to get into this but once I had a sense of who the narrator was I was able to fully commit myself to his life and what was going on and I absolutely fell in love.

What a dramatic story! A tale full of love, loss, regret, fear, and just plain craziness. In short it has all of the emotions of real life all rolled up into one little tale about a man! It’s the telling of this man’s life story from a friend’s perspective and it was so unique, and written so well that I really did not want to put this down.

Every character woven so dramatically around each others lives that the reader is left begging for more!

The thing about this story is that you can feel the love from Gatsby as he agonizes over Daisy and every movement she makes. More than once my heart ached for him and I was curious and not very optimistic about how this story was going to end. But it was written so beautifully and harmonically that I just could not find myself leaving this story alone. And I know this is going to be one of my favs for years to come.

I then immediately watched the movie. And how engrossed I was! The music, the tone, the performances, and add all that to the fact that the speech was nearly perfect to the book. This is one movie that I can say definitively, if you like the book, you’ll love the movie! Although I loved the fact that it was spot on, I also loved the cinematography. It was so graphically done, very reminiscent of The Moulin Rouge with scandalous attire, fabulous music, and wonderful plots! I was not surprised to find that Baz Luhrmann wrote both stories because I could just feel the exoticness in everything that was done, and loved it!

Suppose you could read it so you can say you did
Just realized I bought this book and never finished it. I know it's a classic, really tried to like it. Started out thinking "wow this Fitzgerald guy is quite a writer". Considering all of the description I suppose he is a literary craftsman.

But as the pages went by nothing really happened. With the outpouring of words I never felt like I knew or cared about the characters. Maybe that's how the one percent live, maybe that's the point, but I just didn't get any energy from it. Certainly not any good energy. Not clever, suspenseful. The mystery of a rich, single guy's past can only carry a plot so far. Not particularly thought provoking. One can only take so much yearning and wistfulness.

I must have set the story down and never thought to pick it up again. Maybe someday I'll get stuck in an airport and finish it. And maybe discover that it gets really exciting at the end. Somehow it doesn't matter. For me the energy was all wrong.

NO PAGE NUMBERS
This book does not have any page numbers. It was ordered for a high school English class. Not having page numbers is a problem. I sent the original book back thinking it was a printing error and that the replacement would have page numbers. No luck!

This is about the Kindle Version of the book, not the story
I purchased the kindle version of this book for my English class. I was not aware that the words would run into each other (overlapping letters) and that very frequently there would be no spaces (likeIamdoing forthisexample). With an older dialect that is not commonly used today, these things make it very difficult and frustrating to read. Just be aware of this.

This books is on everyone's must read list as an absolute classic. To be honest I found it quite slow and the plot to be a bit mundane.

It was obvious that someone made a crappy copy of this book
It was obvious that someone made a crappy copy of this book. There are so many errors and giant spaces between words that should not be there. I guess it will serve its purpose as long as nothing is missing from the book. My daughter needed it for her English class.

The Great Gatsby (Sum Up) TL;DR
Unnecessarily confusing with plentiful strange uses of language and figures of speech, but never the less an intriguing story with development just interesting enough to keep you reading.

A foray into the ephemeral
Just a well done examination of how life, greed, and wealth interact. All characters had flaws that made them real or even unalikeable at some points. Nick Carraways keen examination of the dreams of Gatsby and Daisy's quixotic nature was a tragic look into these themes.

I loved its descriptive language
The imagery presented in the language was awesome in my opinion- he captures with authenticity the mood and the aura surrounding gatsby’s story- I felt the narrators voice and emotions as I read the ending

Quick Classic
Finally got around to reading this classic. It's a very quick read, and beautifully written. Not sure I would put it in the top ten of all time, as many literature lovers do, but I enjoyed the story.

Another time and place
I had always wondered about this story no having read it. I suppose in its day the things that brought the rich people together, were very much like this. Free spirits caught up in their own web of deceit and frustration over WANT!!!
