I’m as surprised as you are. I’m not sure I believe all of these short finance stories – they sound too good to be true – but this nonfiction piece does motivate me to become a better, fairer person and stop blaming other people for the bad stuff that happens to me. It’s very preachy though, so not for everyone.

My Mom originally found this book at a random restaurant. She fell in love with and gave a copy to many people. Fifteen years later life was kicking me in the pants and I saw the book on her shelf and read it for the first time. For me this book is life transforming. I continue to read it as I need to and I have memorized specific mediations. I hope this book will bring the same peace to you as it brought to me.

Remember The Secret? Oprah made a big thing about it a few years ago, and it become an international bestseller. This book came out in the 1920’s, but makes the same claims. Both are about how your thoughts and words will manifest themselves in your life. If you constantly worry about being hit by a bus, you will manifest yourself into getting hit by a bus. These books claim that the opposite is also true, and can therefore imagine your way to wealth, true love, and happiness.

I started reading Remember The Secret? Oprah made a big thing about it a few years ago, and it become an international bestseller. This book came out in the 1920’s, but makes the same claims. Both are about how your thoughts and words will manifest themselves in your life. If you constantly worry about being hit by a bus, you will manifest yourself into getting hit by a bus. These books claim that the opposite is also true, and can therefore imagine your way to wealth, true love, and happiness.

I started reading The Secret back when it was on Oprah and I found it so absurd that I barely made it through ten pages. All it seemed to focus on was material goods, and wealth. People would ask for a pale blue Mustang GT, and because their faith was strong and pure, a pale blue Mustang GT would magically appear in their lives. It felt like a joke, or worse, and infomercial for a cult.

The Game of Life is less simplistic, and relies more on the Christian faith to explain why manifestation works (Scovel-Shinn references a lot of Biblical passages). I was actually able to finish it, though I’m not entirely sold on the idea of manifestation. I don’t think you can prevent bad things from happening to you just by having faith, and I don’t think you can have a Mustang GT, in your color of choice, just because you asked for one. Scovel-Shinn never suggests that a bad event can be for the greater good, which is worrisome. No one can live an easy life, no matter how much they pray for one.

One good thing that comes from thinking in the way these books suggest is that it probably makes you a happier person. Believing that you will be successful is a lot healthier than believing you’ll be a failure. And sometimes sanity is it’s own reward.

There’s a popular saying that says ‘God only gives us what we can handle’. Regardless of whether you believe in God, that point of view makes people stronger and less fearful of troubled waters. So, I’m taking this book with a grain of salt—and choosing to think a lot of happy thoughts. ...more

“Why worry? It will probably never happen.”

“There is a supply for every demand.”

“Your job is to act rich, thereby showing perfect faith that you will receive it…”

“Speak these words aloud with power and conviction : 'I now smash and demolish by my spoken word every untrue record in my subconscious mind. They shall return to the dustheap of their native nothingness, for they came from my own vain imaginings. I now make my perfect records from the Christ within : the records of health, wealth, love, and perfect self-expression.' ”

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” (Proverbs 18:21)

“Man must prepare for the thing he asked for when there isn’t the slightest sign of it in sight.”

“...You lost your temper at the bank, and therefore your power."

“A person should not hesitate to ask for help if he sees himself wavering.”

“No man can fail if some one person sees him as successful. Such is the power of the vision, and many a great man has owed his success to a wife or a sister or a friend who believed in him and held without wavering to the perfect pattern.”

“The forces are always working for the man who is pulling the strings himself, although he does not know it.”

“This so often happens: If one is willing to do a thing he is afraid to do, he does not have to. It is the law of non-resistance... Courage contains genius and magic. Face a situation fearlessly, and there is no situation to face. It falls away of its own weight.”

“Talk about what we want, not about what we don’t want.”

“There is an old saying: that man only dares to use his words for 3 purposes : to heal, bless, or prosper. What man says of others will be said of him, and what he wishes for another he is wishing for himself.”

“The body may be renewed and transformed through the spoken word and clear vision... In order to heal the body, one must first heal the soul. The soul is the subconscious mind, and it must be saved from wrong thinking.”

“Love and good will destroy the enemies within oneself, therefore one has no enemies on the external.”

“Nothing on earth can resist an absolutely nonresistant person. The Chinese say water is the most powerful element, because it is perfectly nonresistant... Christ said 'Resist not evil', because he knew in reality there was no evil, so there was nothing to resist... So long as man resists a situation, he will have it with him. If he runs away from it, it will run after him.”

“If you do not run your subconscious mind yourself, someone else will run it for you.”

“Every man is a golden link in the chain of my good, for all men are God in manifestation.”

“One’s ships come in over a calm sea.”

I don't know what I was expecting, but not this.

I don't even believe in God really, and I wouldn't ask Jesus for stuff.

But when I read this book, all I could think was YES. YES. THIS IS HOW IT IS.

Amazing stuff, I will be reading this over and over. This little book has some really profound answers and I wish I'd learned these lessons a little earlier. No matter, I'm learning them now.

I believe in the Universe.

“The game of life is a game of boomerangs. Our thoughts, deeds and words return to us sooner or later with astounding accuracy.” This quote practically sums up the purpose of the book. Although Shinn uses a lot of biblical references to prove her arguments, I believe that her philosophies can be applied to all people with different faiths. She uses a lot of real life examples to prove her points which I loved since most people can relate to the examples she referred to.

Shinn mentions that through the correct frame of mind and intention, one can get the key to a happy life and it is god’s intentions to give him that life. I particularly liked it when she discussed that every human being in this world is great at doing something, and that thing is his destiny that God wants him to pursue in life.

I recommend this book to anyone who seriously wants to change their outlook about life. In my opinion, Shinn successfully communicates in her book that the power of changing our lives is within us.

at first blush, i didn't like this book b/c i totally do not agree with the "manifestation" belief system so prevalent today. it is a very small god, made in our own self-serving image, who can be made to do the bidding of our petty desires: the gimmee-gimmee god.

however, i do believe in grace and in being open to grace and goodness; and i certainly believe in right behavior, esp. as zen buddhism defines it.

this book, on first blush, seemed to focus totally on the power of an individual -- through thoughts, words, and actions -- to manifest good things in their life ... and of course the not-so-good things that happen in everyone's life, which is where i really object to manifestation's big-gumball-machine-in-the-sky concept. people get sick and don't bring it on themselves; people have good fortune and don't do a single thing to bring it on or for that matter even to deserve it. case closed.

so, imo, manifestation is not right-thinking as zen buddhism defines right thinking. even as i do NOT believe in "manifestation" i certainly DO believe in coincidence, i.e. G-d choosing to remain anonymous. things happen -- good and not quite so good -- and it behooves us to pay attention. so i suppose i believe in attention far more than i believe in "manifestation", which is far more nuanced than mere mortals are capable of understanding.

however i decided to stay with the book until at least the 3rd and 4th chapters and slowly -- very slowly -- began to recognize some valid points. helpful and almost healthy thoughts, actually. so IF a person reads this work with a critical mind that knows how to separate the wheat from the chaff, then that reader could possibly refine their thoughts on what life's game is about and how best to be a player. but beware of her definitions. not all of them are reliable.

Someone recommended I read this book after I told them about "The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari". I loved that this book also made reference to various Bible verses because all of these "new age" thinking are deeply rooted in the Bible.
I love the daily affirmations, a sense of calm and peace over comes me after saying the applicable ones.
A great read. I will definitely be re-reading this. ...more

I learnt nothing from this book!

Firstly, I have no doubt in positive thinking, but it's not all about positive thoughts. We can't just "ask god" for things and expect to have them all, because life is hard and it can be unfair sometimes. We should accept the fact that the rosy world doesn't exist. So if we want something we have to WORK in order to have it, not sitting and hoping that the thing we are asking for is going to be right in front of us.

I believe that I have to move forward and be strong after breakup, not waiting and praying that my ex is going to change his mind and come back (like the woman who waited her husband after he left her and went with another woman).
And one last thing, I MAY forgive people who hurt me in the past, but I will never "bless them"!!

What a load of old tosh!

I know many people may disagree & I DO NOT MEAN TO INSULT, but.......

I did not like this book at all - admittedly I was a bit skeptical about it from the beginning, but I wanted to give it a go, so I gave it my best shot!

The 3 best things about this book is that it's short and sweet, well written & the authors viewpoint/argument is easy to comprehend! But in MY OPINION, I think what Florence Scovel-Shinn suggests & argues about in her book about wealth, What a load of old tosh!

But in MY OPINION, I think what Florence Scovel-Shinn suggests & argues about in her book about wealth, happiness, health, love & success; is mostly a whole load of old tosh!

Don't get me wrong, I am not anti:
People wanting to achieve the most out of life or them wanting the same for others
Wanting to be happy
Christian values
Or
Positive thinking.

But I think for some people 'a good boot up the bottom' or 'reality check' would be more prudent to them, than them believing in affirmations or practising Scovel-Shinn's methodologies.

Instead of practising the methodologies suggested, if people want to try and achieve a particular goal or overcome a personal issue, I think it would be more beneficial for them; to adopt a more proactive & practical approach. For example, different types of experiential learning might be one possibility? Such as Kolb (1984) or Honey & Mumford (1982).

Guess what? After reading this book, I have no intention or desire anytime soon to read 'The Secret' by Rhonda Byrne; but who knows, 'never say never'!

If you read this book, I hope you enjoy it, far more than I did & you benefit from reading it?

Happy Reading! ...more

If Rhonda Byrne's THE SECRET had been written with a Christian bent, in a primarily Christian age and culture like the 20's, and contained only author anecdotes about people rather than by the people themselves, you would have this book: THE GAME OF LIFE AND HOW TO PLAY IT.

The author, Florence Scovel-Shinn, centers her book on the basic premise of the "law of attraction," which is also set forth by other famous authors/presenters such as Ester and Jerry Hicks. The idea, supported by many examples in the book, is that that you attract what you concentrate upon. And if you accept that, then you had better start concentrating upon things you really want. Otherwise, you will let your focus drift more toward your worries, doubts and fears - and then you'll manifest those things in your life simply because you're thinking about them. I find this to be a necessary reminder in my life, since I lapse into the habit of worry and anxious thinking by default. I have used this reminder to "manifest" a better suited job, to worry less, and generally to make better everyday and major life decisions.

What I did not like is that both books focus on the monetary aspect of getting what you want, probably because nothing has changed in the nearly 100 years since GAME OF LIFE was written. People want money, have always wanted money, and always will want more money. It's a little disconcerting, actually, knowing that this hasn't changed at all. But many of the examples - those that I choose to concentrate upon - involve creating health and happiness in one's life. I also learned great ways to formulate affirmations, which is apparently one of Scovel-Shinn's known specialities. For example, to create more free time in my life, I asked to receive opportunities for this "under grace" - otherwise, opportunities for free time might be created under adverse circumstances like losing health or a job. ...more

"The Game of Life for Women" has just about the same content as Ms. Shinn's original "The Game of Life and How to Play It"; but "For Women" gets one less star from me specifically for its translation into entirely feminine pronouns.

I can understand publishing a version in which non-gender-specific references are represented with feminine pronouns, rather than the all-masculine pronouns commonly used in the formal grammar of Ms. Shinn's early-20th-century day; but this version goes a step further and transforms ALL male references to female--even when the anecdote was originally about a man.

I think this wasn't the best idea, for two reasons:

1: You'd be hard-put to find a woman on Earth who doesn't have SOME males in her life. An all-female existence feels unnatural in the anecdotes, and distracts me from the core purpose of the book. Ms. Shinn's original version had no shortage of stories about female clients & friends--as a matter of fact, all her books contain pretty much an equal balance of guys & gals. Better to have converted general pronouns to the feminine to achieve the "for women" effect, and leave the subjects of Ms. Shinn's stories alone.

2: Suddenly her book is awash in female chauvinists. :) In Ms. Shinn's original stories, it's always fun to see her stand her ground against pompous patriarchs who are inclined to discredit the advice of a mere woman. Her good sense & faith in God always win the day; but that effect is diminished in this femininized version.

LET ME SUM-UP:

If you're a female reader who'd feel more comfortable with a book that frames its advice specifically for women, then this is a good choice for you. I go to it myself when I just don't feel up to fighting old pronouns.

However, I'd also encourage you to read the original "Game of Life" in Ms. Shinn's own words. Because much is lost in the translation; and I know you're confident enough in your own identity not to be offended by great-grandma's grammar. :)

Florence wrote her book in 1925 and I didn't know how lucid or practical the book would be and I was indeed in for a lovely surprise. The book reads so well, easily understood, lucid in style, practical and applicable in every way. It feels as if a compassionate mother is sitting with me and taking me by the hand and instructing me in order to apply my faith. Most important lesson Momma Florence has taught me is that God is my supply, and there is a supply for every demand. I have to confess Florence wrote her book in 1925 and I didn't know how lucid or practical the book would be and I was indeed in for a lovely surprise. I have to confess that and affirm it daily. If I don't speak the word, how in the world am I gonna receive? Our Lord commands me to "ask" before I can receive. And how do I ask? I must act as if I had already received. That is believing asking and it takes place in an atmosphere of thanksgiving and gratitude. I should not focus on circumstances, thus giving them power. Instead, I should see myself as God sees me, an honorable child of His. Because I have faith in how the Lord works, I am choosing not to be disturbed by circumstances, by what "appears". Don't ever make giant out of circumstances! Focus on your Divine supply. Recently I have been contemplating Psalm 23 in what it says "He restores me", that is, He renews my life. I have to affirm that also. I unite myself to God's Divine Mind. His will be done in my life. What does that mean? It means Divine order is established in my mind, body and affairs. Your will be done in my life, dear Lord, as You and I are one, and I unite myself with your Divine purpose and will. Your Love cleanses my entire being now. The Love of God abolishes anything contrary to Love in my life. Your Love dissolves anything unlike love. I am going to devote each day as I wake up to the Lord. I will affirm: Today is a day of completion; I give thanks for this perfect day, and I believe miracles shall flow and wonders shall never cease.
Towards the end, the last chapter has a summary of beautiful affirmations that will come handy for different uses. This book is a gem and sheer delight. You could read it online here:

I can see this as " the secret " breakdown
I love how when the world gives you something you should feel that you deserve it
How when you want your mind to believe something you makes it into a song
" I have a wonderful business in a wonderful way
And I give a wonderful clothing for a wonderful pay "

How long must one remain in the dark?
Until one can see in the dark.
The Game of Life and How to Play It is a good enough new age manifestation book. There are places which are striking and make sense. But there is also too much simplification that makes manifestation look less like a science.

Repeat after me “I will do wonderful work for wonderful pay.” And within just a few weeks of saying and believing this, you will get a big fat raise. This is the divine right.

If only it was that easy.

This is a great book for anyone looking to open up their way of thinking. Good for those who are Christians and believers in God's good works.
