An Effective Tutorial
This book now comes with a 50 minute DVD which was a lot of fun. As a woman, I found I used many more of the techniques on my partner than vice versa, but we both found the photos inspiring and enjoyed the show. I think that from experience, I would recommend a little selectivity in which parts to try out. In cold weather, for instance, it can be hard to keep oils and bodies warm enough. Also, there is no mention that starting a sensual massage with the abdomen could cause the recipient to have to run to the bathroom before continuing on (healthful, but not sexy). All in all, it was one of the more user-friendly massage manuals I have purchased.

Stupendous
As personal as you can get. The only thing missing is the AromaTherapy Zones and what oils work best to assist in the body's own way of repairing itself.

Rememberance
I had the original back in the late sixties and learn a lot from it. Of course back then I spent most of my time giving massages to my roommates' dates. The girls loved it, my roommates loved it and I can not say I hated it. Now I get to revisit that art and my wife and I really love it.

Classic
Though the book give an image of the seventies, there is always a romantic tone in sensual massage. I like this book, because it covers the basics, and I have little more confidence in massaging my wife

Timeless classic
I first met Gordon Inkeles's wonderful massage books in the early eighties, and taught myself to give a massage following his detailed instructions and beautiful photographs. Over the years, I have purchased many other massage books, a few of them much more technical, but I think that none of them convey the love of massage in the way Inkeles does.

I think that one of the strengths of "The Art of Sensual Massage" is that it brought massage within reach of everybody, not just massage professionals. It told people that it was OK to touch one another and that it was easy to make somebody feel incredibly good.

Something you will not find in this book are instructions about "draping". As the photographs make evidently clear, Inkeles is of the opinion that clothing and sheets just get in the way of a good massage. I suppose this comes from the Sixties, but more than forty years after the book was originally published, it remains as true today as it was back then.

informative
This book is awesome. I skimmed Otto the certain sections i wanted, .ir my girlfriend wanted rather, but very well detailed and mostly easy to understand. There were a couple of times i was slightly confused, but it was solved in the end.

bad hair, etc
VERY old - pictures and text from the 1970s. Pics of men with oily mustaches, bad hair, etc. Gave it as a gift to boyfriend, it became more of a joke than an actual gift.

Much more than meets the eye!
First off I have to say I am very impressed! I didn't expect such a thorough manual! It's chocked full of pictures and information. It's a very classy, tactful book. Thank you again Gordon!

This was my first venture into learning the art of massage which is the only reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5. I have nothing else to compare it to to decide it was excellent so I felt ...Full Review

Amazing book on massaging
It does take some imagination to understand some of the massages, but if you work on visualizing the massage and practicing the moves on yourself or a partner, this book can take your massaging to the next level.

When good material meets a bad publisher
There are a lot of great techniques described in this book but the way the information is presented makes it very difficult to use as a bedside reference. The lay-flat binding is great and each technique includes a wealth of interesting information, but the descriptions of how to actually perform the technique are buried randomly within several paragraphs of small-font text, making them very difficult to find. Until you memorize the techniques, you'll find yourself needing to stop every few seconds to scan through the text to find what you're supposed to do next.

The supplemental information is great and provides excellent context for what each technique is doing and why it feels good but the procedural steps need to be listed separately, in a larger font that is legible from a distance. Some diagrams would be very helpful as well. The included pictures are tastefully done but they seem chosen more for their artistic composition than for their illustrative value.

The book is also showing its age. Aside from a glossy cover, I'm not sure what's new about the 40th anniversary edition but the type face, the layout and photography are all straight out of the 70's. To my eye, many of the pictures appear underexposed and have poor contrast, which makes it hard to see details for many of the techniques.

There's some great content here though and the author clearly knows his stuff. In the hands of a competent publisher this could be a great book. As it is, its only mediocre in my opinion.

Worth the purchase. There are illustrations with the text, which is helpful with massages. If you have a problem with nudity then this probably isn't a text for you. But if you are a beginner or want to prefect your technique a bit. This will help!

Great starting place...
I wish some of the pictures were more clear and/or had better descriptions, but it is a great starting place for sensual couple massage.

Just a bunch of ugly, naked hippies
I was too revulsed by the photos to even bother trying to read this piece of garbage. The font also looks like it's from the 17th century - another put-off.

The art of sensual massage
I thought it was a DVD. That's what I was searching for. It showed videos so I expected a DVD to show up. I was disappointed when a book showed up.
I have not read it yet. Thumped through it and it look like work to learn what I want too.
I'm a visual learner and would prefer to see it verses reading about it.
