Great book...very PRACTICAL

What i loved about this book is how practical it is.
It clarified the theory they have for CBT! But at the same time gave very clear instructions on what one can do to APPLY this theory.
I read many books on CBT, and this was the best by far...
I would recommend you download the CBT application from the app. Store, its a GREAT tool to apply the thinking strategy of CBT in a structured way.

Didn't get much from this book as the highlights are common sense.
The takeaways:
First get absolute clarity on where your strengths are, as well as your struggles. The clearer you are with identifying the issues (the stories you tell yourself), the clearer you'll be on creating solution.
3 Basic Human Needs:
1. Autonomy: The ability to decide what we do ourselves.
2. Relatedness: Meaningful connection with others.
3. Competence: Feeling like we're good at something.
Be aware of unhelpful thoughts:

I've had my fair share of depression and anxiety in life and although I've never seen a therapist I've always looked for books on the subject as well as other psychological reads to better understand the subject. The phrase that caught my eye with this was "..learn to be your own therapist". As I've had family that has suffered from the same, I also realize that it can be beneficial in understanding loved ones and the struggles they are going through. Retrain Your Brain does a nice job of breaking down CBT and its background as well as identifying the different types of anxiety and depression so that you can work to alleviate them. The workbook format is very engaging and the examples bring the points to life very effectively. I received a review copy of this book from the publisher. ...more

Nice intro to cognitive therapy along with a good game plan to implement some of CBT principals. Mixing anxiety skills with depression skills seems to be the norm and I have no idea if they are meshed together in most people. However, since i have issues with depression, but not really with anxiety, it seems like only about 3/4 of the book is applicable to me. My bet is someone with anxiety feels the same way.

thank you, Callisto Publishing, for gifting me this review copy!
.
in the mental health field, I feel like CBT leaves a lot of mystery for those who do not identify as using this approach. for me, personally, I utilize CBT regularly when working with clients, and to me, this book does a great job of giving you an introduction and understanding to what may feel mysterious or confusing about CBT, both for mental health professionals and clients.

my favorite part about this book is the workbook aspect of it. the activities within the book can be done individually, in a group, or verbally, and I feel you would experience a benefit from any experience. some people appreciate having a tangible tool to take home with them for practice, and as a therapist that does give homework, I value having access to these activities.
.
the one piece I struggle with is the ‘7 week’ deadline. when I say that, I know it’s not a deadline, however, I think for those struggling with anxious and depressed feelings and emotions, if they don’t meet this ‘7 week’ deadline, I feel it can evoke feelings of failure. I essentially will utilize this book without the 7 week marker, because I do find value in each of the activities. It’s a great tool to have available when you need it!

This book is a great introduction to Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. The bonus material and workbook style is perfect for beginners or as a refresher.

Read for a coaching assignment. Good stuff. Cool exercises that make you think and apply real-life situations to each chapter.. Would recommend it for anyone having trouble understanding the difficulties of managing depression and anxiety. Also gives insight for "troubled" people around you.

I listened to this and found it helpful enough to go ahead and buy the physical book so I could go through the written exercises. (One of the disadvantages of audio) I like the CBT methodology.

There is a workbook that goes with this. For someone who has no clue what cognitive behavioral therapy looks like it's pretty good. It can be used on it's own or in conjunction with a doctor.

Looks at the link of a thought, feeling and behaviour and how these interact to create anxious behaviours.

One of the simplest books on CBT. Very simple techniques explained elegantly to counter everyday anxiety. A must read for anyone and everyone, not just for people suffering from anxiety. This can help us counter the anxiety we face on daily basis.

Very effective to put in place a different way of thinking. Easy to follow and practice the set work. Would and have recommended to people both socially and in work. Enjoying the life changing benefits and definitely find anxiety and depression easing off to happy and manageable levels.

I just listened to the audiobook without following the program. However, I intend to purchase and go through the program in the future as this will surely be useful tweaking myself to be a better person.

Its nice to be able to participate in your own recovery rather than just being put on meds and talk therapy. Thanks.

This was a good book, overall. My only small complaint would be that there were 2 weeks that didn't really apply to me: facing your fears, and time management. I would have preferred those two weeks be used for more depression and anxiety topics, but I'm sure there are many people for whom those topics are extremely useful.

Solid workbook to help use the techniques of CBT to handle challenges. Particularly helpful to those who struggle with anxiety issues I would imagine. I read it as a practitioner hoping to find some tips and tricks. I found a few useful ones and think it would serve those who are looking to better themselves well.

CBT in a nutshell, cheaper than a therapist. Very nicely explains how our thoughts/emotions can cause our bodies pain. So it is in your head, but it is real. The author did a great job explaining this and many, many other things that sadly affect so many of us in this day and age. There are a lot of books out there on this topic and I would recommend this one.

I listen to this as an audiobook and it was a great way of learning what is and is not CBT, why it is useful and exceptionally practical, and why you would want to get the book and do the real work over a 7 week period. I appreciate how much of this is not trying to dig into your past traumas but instead looking at the problem and actively working towards solutions. There is merit in both but I really like this hands on approach.

This is a great resource, especially for anyone struggling with anxiety or depression, but also for anyone interested in more clearly understanding the interplay between their thinking and behavior. It has a lot of great direction and activities to complete. This is a really good starting point to begin to work on improved emotional health. For me it really helped me to see some ways that anxiety impacted me and my decision making that I was oblivious to.

So, this book was required summer reading by my future residency program, and I actually found it very easy to read and follow along with! I had always heard of CBT, but never actually seen a detailed walk through of it as it was portrayed here. While it doesn't replace seeing a therapist, it's a great stepping stone for those who want to change something in their lives, or are simply curious and may try this book to see what they can change when they put their minds to it.

I received this book from the publisher to preview. I am excited to go through this book. This book helps set goals ,identify thought patterns, break negative thought patterns, face your fears among other things. It is a workbook so you can look back and see your progress from beginning to end. There is plenty of space to write, questions to guide you and information to define each area you are working on.

I've read several books on CBT and picked this one up to get some guidance for my own self-directed CBT. The author provides an incredibly clear and concise introduction to CBT, and I now feel better equipped to provide CBT interventions in my professional life. And just as I'd hoped, I'm now better equipped to use CBT in my personal life. Again, the writing is incredibly clear and concise; moreover, the examples are spot-on, and the worksheets (found online) are logical and user-friendly. This book could be very helpful for people who are unsure of where to turn to. CBT is a fast, practical, and an efficient way of rebooting the brain in people suffering from depression and/or anxiety. This is such a good book. I have used the exercises again and again. Although I have had anxiety and depression it is not lasting as long and I am able to feel like I can gain ground. This book helped me so much that I want to do CBT for other areas of my life. I took my time and did almost every exercise in the book. At first, I had to do it on paper but now I am able to do it mentally much easier. But when I have an issue I go back to the charts that he has and it again is just as helpful.
