Fantastic introduction to needle painting. I'm a total beginner and she made it very easy to get started. The book provides patterns that you can trace and the embroidery floss colors needed for each project. I also found it really helpful to watch her video tutorials on youtube. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to get started in embroidery.

This is a fun book to learn about needle painting and provides easy patterns to follow including the DMC numbers, though I recommend beginners to read about basic embroidery stitches beforehand.

I got this book because I have been learning how to sketch birds, use colored pencils and water color pencil. I have no art training. I thought it would be nice to embroidery some of my sketches and as I searched on the Internet, I discovered this book. Exactly what I was thinking. I embroidered some as a teenager so had some experience with a few stitches. This book is great for a beginner. I have started out with the practice motifs first. So glad I did. I embroidered some as a teenager so had some experience with a few stitches. This book is great for a beginner. I have started out with the practice motifs first. So glad I did. Unlike knitting needles, these needles numbers are 1 for largest, 10 for smallest. I also forgot about the fabric grain needs to be correct when you put your hoop on. My first try, was puckered! The book has great instruction and I have been looking at some videos on the Internet regarding the "starting and ending off". I had always used a knot. So glad I know how to do this properly now. I also searched the Internet for storage ideas and found some good ones. (Floss-Away Bags). I also went back to craft store to get a magnifying light. The first small one I bought, OttLite, was too small, missing instructions and no light? Took it back and just got a magnifying light that hangs from my neck. It actually works good. Had 60 % off coupon. So will use this for now but will keep looking around for a better one later. It really speeds things up to see better! I can see this is very time consuming. Hopefully, I will get faster. I like to get results quickly and I can see, doing a bird is going to take lots of work and time, but I am enjoying it. Suppose that is the point anyway. Love this technique. I hope I will eventually get mine to look like the authors. Absolutely beautiful work in this book. May 20, 2016. Sketched, (juvenile marsh wren) did color pencil and then made a guide for needle painting. Need to practice, but I think I learned a bit through this project. 3/5/2017. Completed my second bird pillow and starting a third. ...more

Trish Burr's books are beautiful. This one, as the name suggests, allows you to start your embroidery career from scratch by prepping the fabric, choosing thread, and placing designs. There's a short primer on the types of stitches used in the book and then the patterns themselves are divided into three sections - level one, for beginners; level two, for intermediate stitchers, and level three, for when you've gotten some experience. Ms. Burr is a self-taught stitcher, so that may be why her Trish Burr's books are beautiful. If you're already a stitcher, there are a number of beautiful little designs, mostly featuring flowers, that you can stitch. I liked them all but preferred the in-depth colour lessons and the vibrant designs of "Colour Confidence in Embroidery". ...more

This is so beyond me at this point but the designs, primarily traditional flowers, are beautiful, the execution exquisite, and the instructions clear. There's a sample of a portrait of a young woman that does look exactly like a painting. It's incredible.

I think this book would allow me to tackle this technique earlier than I might otherwise. My only change would be to make a wider variety of designs.
