Look. If I had to spend a couple hundred dollars on this book AND it's going to dominate my life for the next few months... it's sure as hell going to count for my reading challenge

I READ THIS BOOK!!!

While A&P is interesting to a point, I did NOT enjoy this class or this book.

However, since I did read Every. Single. Word. in this book, and spent the last eight months of my life as if this were my bible, I am OWNING it! I read this book, and am currently in finals week, going into finals with a solid A, thank you very much!!!

I can't really write a conclusive review on how good the text is, but I feel like my brain is exploding with knowledge right now. My study buddy I READ THIS BOOK!!!

My study buddy and I would look at each other and laugh at the words coming out of each other's mouths. Like, who really cares at what stage of meiosis the primary oocyte becomes a secondary oocyte and how many chromosomes are in each stage? Apparently I'm supposed to, so I'll pretend! Can't say it was fun...it's the hardest class I've ever taken. But I sure did learn a couple of new things ;)

Now, if only textbooks didn't cost this ridiculous amount of money! ...more

Textbook, you cost far too much money. I mean, really? I work in publishing, and I know how it's all a rip-off, but come on. That much? That's ridiculous. Sure you have pretty pictures of clavicles and great diagrams of the Action Potential that helped me understand, but I just know that money is not going to the artists or authors or lowly editorial assistants. So give them more money or make the book cheaper.

Textbook, you are too heavy. It hurt to have you in my bag with one other heavy thing or a multitude of light things. Please be less heavy? And I don't want to read you on an a iExpensiveReader thing. I like books, but I like it when they're not so heavy. I don't really know what you can do about that, but maybe you can pay for me to get a massage now, because my back hurts.

That said, textbook, you were good to me. You got me through A&P, and sometimes you even made me smile a little with your subtle wit. I'm going to keep you around, textbook, and maybe some day when we're old and gray we can laugh about how once upon a time you said there was no cure for cancer. At least I hope so.

Well, this book got me through two semesters of A&P. Now, on to Microbiology. I will be keeping this book. It served as a great reference for learning the body systems.

This hefty door-stopper has been my weekly companion for the past two semester at a local college. I'm not sure what I was thinking when I decided to change careers mid-life, but the thought of getting into allied health was/is appealing, so I'll be sticking with it for the next 2-3 years.

I'm not sure what I was thinking when I decided to change careers mid-life, but the thought of getting into allied health was/is appealing, so I'll be sticking with it for the next 2-3 years.

Human Anatomy & Physiology is a book that easily overwhelms. Lectures aside, most of the actual studying was done in a self-study settings, using this book as much as necessary, which is to say about twenty hours each week.

From the start, I knew that I was about to learn some amazing things about the human body, and this book did deliver on that front. It starts relatively easy, on a cellular level, then progresses along the anatomy path from the integumentary system through bones, muscles, and nerves all the way to physiology. That's where the real fun begins. Well, not fun, exactly.

While this book likely only scratches the surface of the human physiology, it is full of fascinating stuff. The way our bodies work, the way the various systems support one another, and the chemical messengers involved are just ridiculously complex and simple at the same time. I will not bore anyone here with scientific explanations, but it is amazing stuff. The only downside to learning this much, is knowing this much in daily life - for example, last time I had the stomach bug, I kept interpreting what my body was doing, how it was compensating, et cetera. After spending nine months with a book at twenty hours a week, it becomes somewhat of a second nature.

For students, I must say this book is well organized, with clear text and great illustrations/photos. Since anyone is healthcare is pretty much required to take A&P, I'm sure there are hundreds of thousands of people reading this very edition. I would recommend that you do your homework, read the chapters, and take the free quizzes available on the publisher's website. Those help with preparations for exams. And there are exams aplenty.

Basic knowledge of Greek and Latin helps greatly with the material, because most names are either Greek or Latin based. If you know what things mean, it will make more sense that memorization alone. Memorization will get you though Anatomy, but actual understanding is necessary for Physiology.

One last note - if you can, take the class at a smaller, community college. I'm glad I did. We had a class of about twenty, and it allowed for interactive lectures, and awesome lab experiments/case studies. The people I know who took A&P at large universities and colleges (and some well known schools at that) have not covered 50% of what we got to do at a community college. ...more

Useful text, got an A. Previous edition was better. Screw you and your unnecessary "updates" to overcharge broke med students - and then remove information!

Took my last undergraduate anatomy final on Friday and couldn't have been more satisfied. This book is detailed when it needs to be and illustrated in a way that makes it more understanding and memorable. One of the best classes and heaviest book I've truly learned a lot from.

School books count, right??? This is a dense one, but necessary for nursing school. Anyone know of any good nursing books (fiction or non) that are entertaining?? Do let me know!

Wow! What an intense and overwhelming class. There is just so much information to know. I'm happy to say I am in FINALS WEEK, and can kiss this class goodbye.

......only until next semester when I will then take AP2 :(

UPDATE: I got an A in AP2!!!!!!

This is the textbook for my class. Most of the illustrations are very helpful. The text and order of introducing subjects can be confusing, but mostly good and clear.

Yayyy! I'm finally finished with this course! Pretty informative book but there are better A&P textbooks out there.

This is my favorite A and P textbook ever. it is comprehensive, readable without big and unnecessary words. I will be using it for A-N-P I, and II and i'm very happy with it so far. the only thing i dislike about this book is the price, so for those who can't afford a new one get a older edition. same thing trust me my friend is using the 3rd ed and he's A student.

Great intro to both Anatomy & Physiology for the complete tyro.

The first chapters on biochemistry brought back all the fantastic knowledge I had forgotten since high school.

Even though it's a textbook, it's still best read cover to cover like a novel as the chemistry builds to simple anatomy which then yields to physiological structuring.

A fun bedtime read.

Logically organized in a linear way, with each subsequent chapter building on the last, progressing from Cell Chemistry to Anatomy to Physiology. Densely-packed (to my mind) with information but pretty accessible, with many high-quality diagrams, tables, figures, etc. I have no basis for comparison with other texts on market (maybe there are "better," more technical, books designed for medical students?), but this appears to be a solid choice for nursing A&P courses.

I am sooooo not a fan. Granted, the topic is complicated. But this text is way too dense, and not explanatory as a good textbook would be. The organization by system leads to absurdities: we learn about one aspect of the liver when reading about the lymphatic system, and then learn about a wholly different function when reading about the digestive system, and neither time does the text tell us about the functional totality of the liver. The liver deserves better! It is awesome!

This was the text book for my General A&P class, but it is not the first book I go to when I have a question. It is way too much information for my class. Class has a 40% pass rate, so I don't think it's that the class is really easy, but this book is so in-depth it's way more information than I care to cloud my brain with. It sounds awful, but I really like The Complete Idiot's Guide to A&P. I gets to the point of what I need to know and has a lot of really helpful tips & tricks to This was the text book for my General A&P class, but it is not the first book I go to when I have a question. I read this book throughout 2010 in conjunction with viewing Marian Diamond's videos. Below is what I posted on my Neurons Firing blog about the videos and the book:

Great textbook and study material. I had a professor who wasn't that great and this book got me through the class with an 88%. A very much liked the diagrams and the cadaver photos prepared me for my first cadaver lab - aside from the smell.

This is going to be possibly my all time favorite non-fictional book. I can't imagine returning it to the book store for a cash payout, regardless of how much of the purchase price I get back.
