I can't recommend this book. I guess, maybe, if you have no experience on the Internet or with the American healthcare system AT ALL, or if you are 26 and about to get kicked off the insurance your parents were lucky enough to even have, then, sure, go ahead and peruse this. No mention of what you should/can do to navigate the system if you have Medicaid and can't get any doctors to see you, or if you DON'T have Medicaid because your stupid vindictive governor didn't take the option. This book is written for people who have estate planners, fir god's sake.

Essentially her advice boils down to 'go on MayoClinic.org to find out more about your condition before you go to the doctor'. There was also some mumbo-jumbo about an algorithm she came up with she calls the CARES system, where each letter stands for... something. It was too complicated and repetitive for me to really CARES much about it, but involved things you should do before your appointments to learn about treatments and find the right doctor; honestly, I can't see it coming into widespread use. Did I mention she thanks Newt Gingrich and Steve Bonner (former CEO of Cancer Centers of America and heavy right-wing donor) in the acknowledgements? Exactly. Though she does do a valiant job keeping politically neutral. However, the book oozes with the pull-yourself-up-by-the-bootstraps (i.e., god helps those who help themselves) mentality, when what we really need is help. Help! An overhaul. Some plan so that it's easy to get healthcare for everyone, not the lucky few.
