As good as the first two books in the Extinction Cycle series.

New York is about to be bombarded again; after the Variants come out of their hiding place, and without much time or options - the sewer is their best chance of survival. And what they find down there (other than the obvious), is truly horrifying and changes everything they thought they knew about the Variants.

A clean-up operation is in progress back on Plum Island; after the eighteen live Variants being conveyed by helicopter to the island escaped, and killed a great portion of its population, before being taken down. Kate is still wrestling with her guilt complex after her VX9H9 bioweapon killed billons of people (infected), which doesn't stop her from creating another one in an attempt to eliminate the rest.

General Kennor of Central Command at Offutt Air Force Base finally realizes that he should have listened to Dr Lovato and Jensen - and orders a retreat from all the major cities. He also receives some unwelcome news about Raven Rock Mountain Complex. Some new players are also introduced - which ramps up the tension.

I really like the series, so far. The action barely stops - and the medical side of things are quite interesting, as Kate and Ellis try to figure out how to create a new bioweapon - before the human race ends up going the way of the Dodo. ...more

Dear author, you have stressed me the hell out! There should be a law against writing a book so captivating, the reader needs to recuperate from all the missions, battles, and rescues they had to emotionally suffer through alongside these characters.

This book is told so that you can't help but get to know each character whether good or bad. I mean I was afraid for what some of these characters were facing. Some characters I wanted to kill, while others, I wanted to save.

Mr. Nicholas, I could choke you for ripping my heart out. That's all I can say without spoiling it for other readers.

I love how mostly everyone tried to do the right thing by looking out for each other, sacrificing their life to save someone else's.

This story takes place during desperate times, and in this book the author gives you a nice glimps into the heart of each character.

I hope everyone that reads this book after me, enjoy it as much as I have. I'm completely invested into each character I've gotten to know since I've started this series, and if Nicholas let something happen to the ones I feel really close to, I'm going to be upset with him for at least a week or so. I know it don't matter, but I'm just saying. I hope to get to know Riely and Meg more, they are so perfect for each other and Meg ain't no Daisy: ) ...more

Beckham's team are racing through the sewers pursued by variants, and hurtle into the den where Meg is attached to one of the webs. Knowing that he cannot free everyone and that many have already been fed on, Beckham is left with a hard decision-leave them or kill them out of mercy. However one lax moment is all it takes to bring disaster to the team as they try to reach an abandoned Humvee to get towards the extraction point.

Plum Island is in panic mode as a naval ship appears to be on Beckham's team are racing through the sewers pursued by variants, and hurtle into the den where Meg is attached to one of the webs. Knowing that he cannot free everyone and that many have already been fed on, Beckham is left with a hard decision-leave them or kill them out of mercy. However one lax moment is all it takes to bring disaster to the team as they try to reach an abandoned Humvee to get towards the extraction point.

Plum Island is in panic mode as a naval ship appears to be on collision course but the seemingly abandoned ship avoids them and runs aground further up the coast. Knowing that supplies are beginning to run out, Jensen decides to take a team to the beached vessel in the hope that there will be supplies to salvage. But what else could be lurking in the depths of the ship? Despite the danger, Fitz is delighted to be given the chance to do active service again. When things go badly wrong, Kate thinks that bombing the ship with her weapon might be a last option to prevent catastrophe.

Kate and Ellis start work on finding another bioweapon to destroy the variants, starting with using a captured variant. The General decides that Plum Island will now be under the overall command of Wood, Gibson's best friend and colleague, who Jensen doesn't trust. Wood stamps his authority over all operations which in particular angers Fitz, demoted to guard duty with Apollo. Kate and Ellis become aware that everything they say and do are being monitored and they find out just how deep in the initial program Wood was. With Ghost on a recon mission it is Fitz who notices that there are swarms of variants swimming towards Plum Island...

Command bunkers have already been infiltrated and now it is the General at Central Command who is under threat and trying to find a way to stop the variants from getting inside. Beckham's team are on a mission to get to one of the bunkers that they have lost contact with to find an important government member and get the supplies that Kate needs for her newest weapon.

This book was another high octane rollercoaster of action and tension. There are several great action scenes to enjoy like the escape from New York, the raid on the ship, the attack on Plum Island, the two different bunker stories and the tension of developing another weapon to take care of the variants. Add to that the simmering tension of Wood taking over command and there is plenty going on to keep the reader happy. I enjoyed the addition of the German Shepherd Apollo though it gives me something new to worry about! There is also a very shocking finale which I wasn't expecting...

This series continues to greatly entertain with constant plot twists to keep you guessing.

Another fantastic novel by Smith. After reading the first 2 books in the series, I had no idea how the author could top them. I liked this book in the series a lot, too. I'm listening to the next one and it is a big draggy so I think that's made me appreciate the first three books even more.

The sex scenes are pretty appalling. Not offensive, but just kind of cringe-y. Like, "They realized they wouldn't have time for a FOURTH round." Yeah they're badass military dudes and it's the end of the world, but it is a bit much.

This release is perhaps more character driven than even the last character driven release in the series since the threats faced by the survivors are not entirely represented by the infected. The protagonists really go through the grinder on this one, and it makes for great storytelling.

Here we are at book number three and things just keep getting better and better. I am so invested in this series that I cannot bare to have any of the characters hurt or even worse. The characters are very true to life and make it very easy to feel for what they are going through. When we left off last time Reed and Jensen along with other members of Team Ghost had been dumped into the sewers underneath New York as the rest of the military evacuated back to plum Island. Things did not look good for them as they found their way through the maze underneath the city. I will say that everywhere they go they seem to find survivors in the most unlikely places.

Kate is still feeling as if she is responsible for the death of the world, even though she made it at least a little safer. Major Kennor finally takes responsibility for his mistakes, though its to little to late. And they are back to needing Ellis and Kate to come up with a way to save them all.

The tension and horror are ratcheted up ten fold as changes come to the Island and to the world around them. They are working to survive for each other and for their friends. I have to say again that Reed is my ideal man but if Fitz were a little older I could go for him too. Death, destruction, loyalty, betrayal, and bravery. These are things they deal with and it is exciting to get to be a part of it.

If you have not read this series you have no idea what you are missing, so you should remedy that right away. Extinction Horizon is where it all begins but the story is far from over here.Enjoy! ...more

Victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival. - Winston Churchill

This is the third book in the EXTINCTION CYCLE series, with at least four planned. Book one EXTINCTION HORIZON and book two EXTINCTION EDGE were two of my favorite post-apocalyptic books...ever. Now book three in the series EXTINCTION AGE is almost here (June 16 is the publication date) and this is the best book so far. MSGT Reed Beckham and Dr. Kate Lovato are back, battling the Variants by any means possible, along with the other members of Team Ghost...and Fitz, the sharpshooter soldier who just happens to have blades for legs.

Besides being killing machines, the Variants are evolving quickly into even smarter, deadlier foes against mankind. Operation Liberty, which failed overwhelmingly, was just an example of the animal cunning of these creatures.

Now Kate is back in the lab trying to come up with another weapon to use against the Variants. If she fails, things are looking downright impossible for mankind.

Author Smith has a deft touch with the rapid pacing of this series and this book really zooms along. He also has a talent for bringing his characters to life on the pages. Of course, that doesn't mean they're going to stay alive. His battle scenes end up looking like wedding scenes in A Game of Thrones.

So be prepared for bloodshed, pathos, romance, and hope. This is a dark series but there are moments of hope, too.

Book four EXTINCTION EVOLUTION is due out in Fall 2015. ...more

I swear this series just keeps better and better. Shout out to my husband, Josh--"Thanks for recommending this series!"

Moving on, wow! As the story gets better so does the narrator. At first (book 1), I was uncertain about him, but now, I feel he's able to portray the characters in such a way that really speaks to the reader, at least to me. You can hear all the emotion in his voice (without him overdoing it) and it adds to the story. While he can do a female voice, Kate just always sounds like she's trying to come across as sexy. Based on the softness of her voice, I'd imagine her as some tiny woman that's very hesitant and scared about everything. The fact that she's in the position she's in, well it doesn't fit the voice, in my opinion.

(Spoil alert below)
Mr. Smith managed to create one of those kinds of characters that a reader loves to hate, in this case, it's Col. Wood. I don't think Col. Gibson was anywhere near as bad as Col. Wood. The fact that he was in charge and talked down to all the other characters (yes, he was high ranking) really drove me crazy, but in a good way. Needless to say, I couldn't wait for someone to kill him. lol That was a great way to end book 3. I'm really curious to find out what's going to happen with the Secretary of State now in charge. On to book 4. ...more

I am definitely a big fan of the series and of this author. He is definitely a fave and I will keep reading all of his books.
For the ladies, the love story is still going strong and I am happy about it ;) We might even see another one soon or at least I think we might and it is with one of my fave characters.
The end was so good and again I said OMG!

Here we are at book 3, and you would think that things might slow down a little, well think again!!! In the last book, Beckham and his crew were sent into New York for Operation Liberty, but he had a bad feeling about this mission because he knew that there should have been more Variants than what were showing up on the recon mission. In the last book, Beckham and his crew were sent into New York for Operation Liberty, but he had a bad feeling about this mission because he knew that there should have been more Variants than what were showing up on the recon mission. But where are they? They soon found out and Beckham and some of his men were left stranded in New York with only one option, to head down to the sewers to find a way out. Now we pick up with them in the sewers and what they find down there changes everything.

Meanwhile on Plum Island, Kate and Pat are trying everything to find a way to kill the Variants. With live specimens on the Island, it will hopefully only be a matter of time. But she knows in her heart that the only way to kill them may be another bio weapon. Will she be able to do the unthinkable.

But that's not all!!! A seemingly abandoned Navy destroyer crashes into the Connecticut shoreline and with resources dwindling on the Island. A team is sent to investigate and retrieve anything they find. What they do find, is something they thought was eradicated!

I have to say, these books are one heck of a roller coaster. It's pretty much non stop and this one even more so. Beckham and some of his team are left in New York and head to the sewers. During this my heart was in my mouth because I couldn't see how they could get out of it. But it's Beckham!! He even manages to find a survivor, Meg, badly wounded but alive. Then the author says... that's not enough and proceeds to send a certain team to the abandoned Naval Destroyer where they find....., I'm not going to say because it would be a spoiler!! ;) Needless to say, the team are stretched to their limits and it all seems hopeless.

One thing I love about the series is the characters. There are some of the most memorable ones I've ever read. I love Beckham, he is such an amazing person and always tries to do what's right no matter what. I also love Kate, she is smart, brave and strong. Then we have Horn, Riley, Fitz and of course Apollo! All are so well written and developed that you can't help but root for them. Apollo is the best though. Such an amazing dog!! Can't wait to read more about him,

This is without a doubt an action packed, addicting, entertaining and engrossing read. I'm listening to each back to back and finding it hard to put them down, because there isn't a good place to pause them. Something is happening all the time and I need to see what happens next, which leads to me staying up way too late and being tired, but it's so worth it. I am deep into book 4 already and absolutely loving it!!! Well worth the credits!!!

Bronson Pinchot was once again amazing. He has these characters down perfectly and nails the whole performance. I was captivated and enthralled the whole way through. ...more

I'm reading this and thinking , these "soldiers" have seen and done things that they know are wrong but they still go ahead with it because it's an order. They just follow orders blindly knowing the outcome and not one of them confronts/questions the higher ups about their decisions or just not do something they know is wrong and deal with the consequences after.
Who are the real zombies in this story ?

If you've enjoyed the previous two books, you'll be welcoming this latest with eyes glued to the page. Ghost Team is back, along with Dr. Kate Lovato, whose deepening relationship with Ghost leader, Reed Beckham, has her fully recommitted to developing a weapon to destroy the Variants.

Mankind is plunging further toward extinction thanks to the Variant threat, but even worse are the human enemies embedded in the upper echelons the military's hierarchy. Their incompetence and duplicity have led to several bad decisions over the course of this series, as these men are revealed to be less interested in saving the world than in covering their own rears. As such, they're a great force to root against and you're constantly waiting and hoping for them to get their comeuppance.

The finale is also one of the strongest and most satisfying in the series thus far, mixing fist-pumping cheers with an excruciating denouement that left me screaming at my Kindle.

Extinction Age is brimming with action and terrific set pieces that include a derelict aircraft carrier and the underground tunnels of a secret FEMA installation, along with a few new characters to root for and villains to despise. The supporting cast each get a chance to shine, as well, particularly Dr. Ellis, as well as wounded warrior Fitz, who seems to be building toward a more central role in the series.

Smith does an excellent job balancing the bleak nature of this particular post-apocalyptic narrative with a sense of hope and optimism, despite how dark things get. If you've been following this series thus far, then Book 3 is certainly one to buy. If you haven't, then hustle over to the Extinction Horizon page and start from the beginning ASAP. ...more

Returning to Plum Island, the safest place on earth right now, Beckham is sent to recover supplies from a wrecked naval destroyer – overrun with original variants. Dr. Kate Lovato’s head is spinning. Struggling against time, her and her team discovers a cure, otherwise known as the superman drug that can end all variants. The question is – who will get this cure?

So many things happened in this story that really just made me want to cry frustrated and angry tears! Kennor is jerk and so is his second in command. In the end I was glad to see him them get what was coming to them. Unfortunately it didn't make up for the losses endured.

I was reading the whole book expecting it to end so when I got to 90% and it wasn't really showing any signs of slowing down, I started to get a little irritated knowing that there was most likely going to be another book. I did verify that this will only go through a 4th book, so that's good, and I do understand the author's desire to break the last book up into two so that we don't have some 600 page tome after the very evenly lengthened books we've been reading up to this point.

Would highly recommend to sci-fi fans. ...more

"Extinction Age" by Nicholas Sansbury Smith takes off from where Extinction Edge has left us: the edge of our seat. We're well into the story in book 3 and have seen moments of almost triumph and defeats in both arenas, military and science. The action and suspense don't let us down in this story. Claustrophobic undergound tunnels add to the great drama where the military conflict is concerned while virologist Kate Lovato is struggling with more than just the search for a cure. Beckham and Lovato are great characters that keep you interested in the human side of the story while the action just keeps going with new threads and turns.
As apocalyptic thrillers go, they don't get better than this. Well researched and competently written this is a cracker from start to finish.
