From renowned pop-up masters Robert Sabuda and Matthew
Reinhart comes an awe-inspiring tribute to the world's most beloved
extinct animals and their 180-million-year reign on our
planet.

Open this book and a massive T. REX springs out,
flashing a startling jawful of jagged teeth. Turn the next spread and a
ravishing raptor unfurls and appears to fly off the edge of the page.
Inside the amazing ENCYCLOPEDIA PREHISTORICA: DINOSAURS are "shield
bearers" in full-body armor, creatures with frilly headgear, and
weighty, long-necked giants. There are even amusing tidbits on the
history of paleontology itself — like a pop-up version of a
Victorian New Year's dinner in the belly of a dinosaur model, or a pair
of scientists locked in a literal tug-of-war over bones.
Full of
fascinating facts and lighthearted good humor, this breathtaking book
includes fascinating, up-to-the-minute information about popular
dinosaurs as well as many lesser-known varieties. With each of six
spreads featuring one spectacular, large pop-up as well as booklets of
smaller pop-ups and text, ENCYCLOPEDIA PREHISTORICA: DINOSAURS is a
magnificent display of paper engineering and creativity — an
astonishing book that will be read, admired, and treasured
forever.

Reviews for Encyclopedia Prehistorica Dinosaurs : The Definitive Pop-Up:

Today I had some high school students making fun of pop up books. I decided to show them this book. I heard comments like, "that's intense, "pretty amazing," and "cool." My favorite comment, "Okay I was wrong, that pop up book is rad." The book is wonderful to use to illustrate the art of pop ups and kids always like dinosaur books, especially boys.

Not only is this book incredibly informative in spite of the lack of space for words in amongst all the pop-ups - explaining how our perceptions of dinosaurs have changed over the past century and since the days of Richard Owen, the distinction between bird-hipped and lizard-hipped dinosaurs and the three eras in which they lived, and the science of Palaeontology - but it is also a work of art! With over thirty-five intricate, colourful and (dare I say?) realistic pop-ups, justice is done to every suborder, introducing less commonly known species with room enough still for the "big hitters" (Tyrannosaurus Rex, Brachiosaurus, Triceratops......)
A delicate volume - fit only for those aware of the respect such a book demands; adults and children alike - but a must-have for ANY dinosaur enthusiast! ...more

Favourite childhood non-fiction book-- full of interesting facts about dinosaurs which are hard to forget, considering they're paired with stylistic 3D dinosaurs which pop out of the book.

We checked this out from the library. This unfortunately meant that many of the amazing pop-ups were already broken. However, the ones that remained were so cool. The kids really enjoyed them. The whole book was just...interesting, intriguing. I will be adding this to our "hope-to-own" list.

This is an awesome pop-up nonfiction book that allows students to enter into the world of dinosaurs. This book would not be as exciting for a read aloud because students would not be able to explore and see all aspects of the book. It would be a great resource or incentive for learning!

The way the dinosaurs are brought to life through paper is simply incredible. The illustrations and 3D effect are automatically engaging for the reader. Along with the amazing artwork, this book contains a plethora of information about dinosaurs back when they were alive and now. A great book to show kids who are entranced with dinosaurs.

This pop-up book is so incredibly well done, would make an excellent visual reference for your prehistoric books collection of your classroom library. Students who are visual learners will grasp all of the facts/information as well as all of the other not-so-known facts about dinosaurs. Concise, witty, and fun.

This is the best pop-up book we've ever owned. The details are wonderfully rendered, and the individual pages have small, book inserts, that are also pop-ups. In terms of actual knowledge/facts, there are probably better books out there, in terms of just illustrations, detail of pop-ups, I don't think I've ever seen its equal. If you kid like dinosaurs... this is a must-own.

Well-written and beautiful. Not only does this title name and have three-dimensional representations of dinosaurs, it touches on interesting tangential subjects like Waterhouse Hawkins and the Victorian fascination with dinosaurs. The T. Rex is delightfully scary and the small spread of an allosaurus pulling the flesh from his prey is absolutely genius! A must-have for dinosaur lovers, pop-up collectors and Sabuda fans. I NEED a copy of this for my collection!

This book is wild! There are pop-ups, on pop-ups, on pop-ups about all kinds of dinosaurs and facts about each kind. Students would love looking through this during a dinosaur unit. It would be awesome to even bring in fossils and "dig" for them. This would be a book to show in small groups, so everyone could see and appreciate the intricate detail of the pictures/pop-ups. I would love to have a whole library of Robert Sabuda pop-up books. They are phenomenal.

This is a non fiction book intended for primary readers. An informative book with facts about dinosaurs. This is a amazing pop up book with beautiful artwork. There is alot of information for new fans and old fans alike. I wish there was a way to make them stronger because my son just loves this book and I am terrified that he is going to destroy it. If only the names of the dinosaurs were easier to pronaounce and easier to remember.

This is a great book for young children. My grandson loved it and would sit with it in his lap and go through it page by page and eventually he would make up his own stories. When he got to the page where the Tyrannosaurs head popped up he would say, "Missed me mr. meat eater". We have it still and it is not in real bad shape because he lost it in the wilds of his closet for years. I will give it to him for his children.

I was thoroughly impressed with this informational children's book. Not only were the pop ups absolutely incredible, but it is full of detailed information. It discusses different types of dinosaurs, even the lesser known ones. Not only does it give information on the specifics of types of dinosaurs but their habitats, how they came to be, how they went extinct and much much more. The attention to detail was very evident and I think this would be a useful book for any young child all the way up I was thoroughly impressed with this informational children's book. If you haven't already taken a gander at this here gem, I highly recommend checking it out. I saw it last year in a toy store & knew that one day I would make it mine, but was unable to justify the $30 some-odd dollars they were asking for it at the time. Well, imagine my delight to find a copy in the clearance section of my local Borders for a mere $7.99! The woman behind me in line, who looked like she might try to wrest my copy away from me until I pointed out a nearby stack, tells me If you haven't already taken a gander at this here gem, I highly recommend checking it out. It is beautiful and amazing--a seriously cool effen book. ...more

I received this book as a present for my son years ago (Thanks, Ben!). We rediscovered it again recently when we were in a "Wimpy Kid" series gap. We both loved it and appreciated the artfulness of it immensely, and though the vocabulary and dinosaur names occasionally proved a challenge, the beauty of this book pulled us through.
