I will rarely waste my time writing a bad review but this snake oil salesman deserves it.
any parent when faced with a challenged child will look for any way to make their child more normal
it is in our nature
it is not because we do not love our child for who he is but because we want their life to be easier
I am the mother of 5, 4 of whom have some special needs of one type or another. This book was recommended to me by my sister in law who loves her nephews and like me would love to see I will rarely waste my time writing a bad review but this snake oil salesman deserves it.

I am the mother of 5, 4 of whom have some special needs of one type or another. This book was recommended to me by my sister in law who loves her nephews and like me would love to see anything to make their lives easier
I went into this book skeptical but hopeful I want there to be an easy fix
be it a diet
or exercises or games or something anything

I can see how this book preys on the desperation of a well meaning loving parent
It says in many instances to have cured ADHD and Autistic spectrum disorders.
I'm going to stop right here because first off Im going to call BULL
IF this man had really cured Autism and ADHD I would like to know why this is not national news?
why is this man not being brought up in each and every single pediatric conference ? why is his name not being sung as the greatest savior of children since Jonas Salk?

This book gives beautiful, heart wrenching stories of children who were cured by this system.
It then goes on to tell you the way to fix your child of course you could always find one of his clinics and have his system administered to your child by the professional counselors (the first clue that this home version will not work you , you cheap fool are not paying enough money for the experts you bad parent you! yes this book uses guilt to manipulate you be warned)

First going on the gluten and casein free diet (no wheat and no dairy essentially) now be on this diet for 6 months follow it religiously any failure in this diet even a small amount will be a set back because your child has a food sensitivity
some issues with this
no tests run just cut wheat and dairy out of his diet huh OK

granted I am not an expert on food sensitivities and how they affect brain behavior even a small amount will cause a complete relapse of symptoms and according to this doctor it takes months before you will notice a difference in the childs behavior

my issue comes not just with the diet portion however it comes with the statements that the doctor makes about the effectiveness of his program
basically if you follow his program your child with get better
GREAT I thought
then I read on
if his program does not work it is because either
1) your child was born with an issue far to severe for his program to be effective
2) you deviated in some way from the program you fed your child something with casein in it or something with Gluten in it OR you did not follow his directions exactly
or (and this was the best one)

3) your child somehow experienced brain damage from whip lash as a small baby

no matter what the program is right and works if the programs fails the program did not fail YOU as a parent failed

This "doctor" should be ashamed of himself he claims he does this "for the kids"
face up to facts there doc you do this for the money you swindle out of the pockets of parents desperate to make life just a tiny bit easier for their struggling child

Just because a bunch of people have read negative opinions held by a bunch of other people about any given book or program, it’s really meaningless until you take the time to engage with it and see for yourself. I have two sons whom I enrolled at our local Brain Balance center from 8/2013-11/2013. Anyone who shoots down Melillo's work has not taken the time to do a firsthand observation of those in the program. It has been truly life-changing for us. For my blog on the subject, see: Just because a bunch of people have read negative opinions held by a bunch of other people about any given book or program, it’s really meaningless until you take the time to engage with it and see for yourself. Anyone who shoots down Melillo's work has not taken the time to do a firsthand observation of those in the program. It has been truly life-changing for us. For my blog on the subject, see: www.brainbalancing.wordpress.com

Numerous critics like to portray Dr. Melillo as nothing more than a snake oil salesman who just wants your money. The only problem with that is that he’s basically printed a step- by-step guide on how to help your kids do the same home programming exercises for free, in this book “Disconnected Kids.” I've met him personally when a new center opened up in our town. He is a pioneer in this field. He's done years of research and developed a program that truly changes lives every day.

Just recently in a happy development from the scientific establishment, UCSF came out with a ground-breaking research. They are the first group to have identified real physical/biological differences in the brain of kids with Sensory Processing Disorder. They admit that for many years, people just didn't believe SPD even existed. But as parents of these kids, we absolutely knew that it did, and we live with it every day. Among other things, the UCSF report noted that the white matter in the brains of SPD kids is preventing the right and left sides of the brains from connecting properly. This is exactly what Melillo claimed, long before the establishment institutions recognized it. I believe that further research will only continue to reaffirm that Melillo has been on the right track all along.

The program fee at a Brain Balance center covers a three-month course of programming. It’s comparable to sending your kid to a world class tutor three times a week. But even if you don't want to invest that much money you can do an exhaustive assessment for 300 bucks, and they will give you a home program to follow that fit's your kids needs, no strings attached. But even without an assessment, any parent can start doing the exercises with their kids, straight out of this book. Try it for a month, and then gauge if you've seen measurable differences in your ADHD/SPD/Asperger's kids. Can it cure all mental health challenges? Certainly not. But many of the 21st Century disorders that our kids suffer from CAN be ameliorated and even cured (such as ADHD)by changing the diet to heal the leaky gut, and adopting the exercise program outlined in Disconnected Kids. The diet changes are not for sissies, it's much more than just removing gluten and casein from the diet. But it is transformative, even for a person not suffering from a neuro-disorder.

Try this: Put on a pair of goggles that continuously flashes a light into your right eye, while feeding auditory stimuli into your left ear. Then put a continuously vibrating cuff on one of your legs and one of your arms. Then get on a balance beam, and walk forward and then backwards over the entire length without falling off. Then when you’ve managed that successfully, do it again. But this time, throw a ball up and down in front of you at the same time. Then throw in the metronome. My 13-year-old can do it now, no problem. And he no longer suffers from ADHD. That's a sample of the kind of exercises they do at the Brain Balance centers.

Gathering a bunch of negative opinions from people and writing a critical piece about it is quite simple. In giving credence to such an assessment, one disregards the value of engaging in applied science. That is what Dr. Melillo did almost twenty years ago, as he worked with patients in rehab, and observed how multi-disciplinary interventions, when combined and applied simultaneously, healed them. If we waited around for the mainstream establishment to make innovations, and figure out how to combine modalities across medical communities, we’d all still be in the dark ages. Thank God for Robert Melillo. ...more

Robert Melillo is a chiropractor with additional courses taken in neurology, thus making him a board-certifed "chiropractic neurologist". He has worked with over 1000 children, and claims to have the cure for ALL neurological disorders, from autism to schizophrenia, all based on the idea of "brain balance", or communication between the two hemispheres of the brain. Several "Brain Balance Centers" have opened up around the country, and I cringe to think how much money parents are paying for these Robert Melillo is a chiropractor with additional courses taken in neurology, thus making him a board-certifed "chiropractic neurologist". Several "Brain Balance Centers" have opened up around the country, and I cringe to think how much money parents are paying for these treatments that purport to be the panacea for all known neurological ailments in children. None of his claims are based on empirical, scientific, clinically-controlled studies, but on anecdotal reports from satisfied parents who are thrilled that their child is now on the honor roll, interested in rock concerts and wanting to play outside. I do agree in part with his basic tenet, that the brain is "plastic", in other words, it can compensate and repair itself to a degree, and that no child's destiny is ever set in stone. I caution parents to always be leery of anyone or any methodology that claims to "cure" their child of anything. ...more

I am still not done with this, and I will finish it. The first five chapters are salesy, poorly written and cliff hangers in annoying way. It's like reading an informercial about his REVLOUTIONARY CURE FOR AUTISM AND ADHD. He comes across as a quack, because he makes so many claims about why the brain does certain things. In all my studies of neuropsychology, brain development in university studies and the maybe hundreds of books and articles I've read about brain function since college I've I am still not done with this, and I will finish it. In all my studies of neuropsychology, brain development in university studies and the maybe hundreds of books and articles I've read about brain function since college I've never seen claims like this without citing any research. He also was quick to blame autism and other neurological problem on too much TV, two parents working and loads of other crap. Somehow I wanted to stay hooked to see where the infomercial was going. I realized pretty quickly he is not a doctor with any knowledge of neruological disorder etiology, but rather a chiropractor, which wasn't a deal breaker for me. I still wanted to see what he thought he could accomplish. I am open minded.

And here I am 160 pages in and he's finally giving parents exercises and activities that will help with brain development and connectivity. I've had enough kids in therapy for me to see value here. There actually is some "meat" to this book and some reasoning in his pompous and inaccurate medical claims.

I will update once I reach the end but right now, he's getting 2 stars for telling parents it's their fault their child has major brain issues, and for having no medical research to back up any of his claims before publishing it as fact. But that doesn't mean some of his therapy and treatment exercises don't give some children progress in their development. I do see value in it.

Update** after finishing. I think his exercises DO have value and can be helpful. But I still give the book 2 stars for his outlandish and flawed lack of science in describing the causes of autism and by selling so hard his ability to cure it for every child. I find it hogwash. ...more

My husband read this book in the fall of 2009, and felt it answered every question he ever had about our son's autism. I was able to read it before our son's evaluation a few month's later (except for the specific exercises/treatments depending on your diagnosis), and I would consider the material groundbreaking. It explains a lot about the brain, its astounding complexity and infinite potential. We are exited to work on a home program, and see where it takes us.

We are currently going through the Brain Balance Program for our 14 yr old daughter who has Asperger's. We are in week 3 and seeing some early results. This is a MUST READ for anyone who is on the austism spectrum or suffers from dyslexia, add, adhd, and other disorders.

Brilliant, practical, and understandable. Robert Melillo literally wrote the textbook here on the assessment and functional treatment applications for children with Autism, Asperger's, ADD, ADHD, dyslexia, etc. For any parent (or patient) dealing with any sort of neuro-behavioral disorder, THIS IS A MUST!

This is one of those books that I don't think I'll ever really "finish"; I have referred to it often during the past year. Packed with exercises to help create brain connections in children who need extra developmental intervention to become the best that they can be, it is a great tool to help me help my five year-old in her development.

There is a lot of good advice in here, but short of institutionalization of the young adults with Asperger's with whom I live, implementing - and enforcing - the full regimen of Brain Balance interventions appears quixotic at best, impossible at worst. What's left is a sales pitch for a particularly pricey chiropractic intervention, of which I am instinctually skeptical, along with some sloppily applied behaviorism. I don't doubt the veracity of the powerful cases presented, or the sincerity of Dr. Melillo's work. However, good science is inherently much more tentative and modest in its claims than what is presented here - and relies on the results of controlled research, not anecdotes, to make its case. ...more

I have seen Disconnected Kids described as a marketing book. That was not the intent, and that information came straight from the horses mouth. The reason for the detailed information on the Brain Balance program is so that anyone can duplicate it for free (the assessment is difficult to do, the program is much easier. An assessment costs less than a new TV). Do you know anyone who has spent enormous amounts of money on research only to give away the information for free? I don't. An assessment costs less than a new TV). Do you know anyone who has spent enormous amounts of money on research only to give away the information for free? I don't. The reason that there was not much empirical evidence to start was that it takes time for other institutions to get interested in the topic, raise money for research, get it approved and print it. Be skeptical absolutely, but don't limit yourself when reading reviews of people who haven't put their kids through the program. There are 3rd party peer reviewed articles now, and the program is not a quick fix. It takes a lot of work to change the brain. Dr. Melillo does not own most of these centers. The majority are owned by people who spent 3 months in another city, put their children through Brain Balance, then moved back home to open a center because of the difference it made. Wouldn't it be sad to find out years later, that the treatment worked and it's too late because your child's brain is now fully developed and you only listened to they nay sayers? Traditional medicine wants to treat everyone with drugs, some with horrible side affects and that don't work after a year. It takes time for a new idea/treatment to be accepted. Some doctors still don't recommend vitamins. The knowledge gained in neuroscience is changing so fast now that by the time a textbook is published, it is out of date. We CAN change the brain. It is now well known that learning new information and regular exercise changes neurons. There are other books on Brain Balance, and a ton more information on neuroscience. Be skeptical, but educate yourselves with scientific information, not the opinion of those who have not taken the time to investigate deeper into the subject. I have taken the time not only to research this particular topic, but also how diet affects the brain. The child is tested for food intolerances, not just put on a diet removing generic problematic foods. Intolerances can cause inflammation in the brain, caused by the break down of the blood-brain barrier due to leaky gut syndrome. Remember that we all have different life experiences, education, knowledge and biases when reading reviews. ...more

I am currently reading this book. I am choosing to exhaust every route in helping my 8 year old daughter before considering medication. After my daughters fourth therapy session I was told she may have Bi-Polar disorder. I was recommended a special school to take her to for an assessment. I am choosing to exhaust every route in helping my 8 year old daughter before considering medication. After my daughters fourth therapy session I was told she may have Bi-Polar disorder. I was recommended a special school to take her to for an assessment. The school seemed perfect because they do hands on therapy during class to teach the kids coping skills, but also medicate the kids. When I told them, however, that I did not want her medicated I was basically told to go somewhere else until I was ready to medicate her. IF they really wanted to help these kids they would offer the therapy w/out the meds as well. And let me just add that they are expensive and partly covered by insurance (I will get back to this). What concerned me most was that across the street from the school was a child study center. I looked them up and they medicate kids who have psych disorders or who are PREDISPOSED to them which I found alarming. I was told my daughter would more than likely be put on mood stabilizers and ADHD types of medications after only the second class which is when she would be assessed by the psych. Then he would give the prescriptions to the nurse and she would let me know what meds to get filled from the pharmacy (through my insurance). I questioned them about why the psych did not first observe the kids and then recommend meds after the assessment AND observation. I was told that the info provided by the parent and docs one time assessment was enough. SO..my point here is that nothing is scientifically proven or a sure thing...I am finding that many of the alternative methods for helping kids are being called fake or the docs being called quacks but those psychiatrists prescribing the meds don't know for sure what will help either and just experiment until they find the right cocktail of drugs to mask the symptoms. While I do believe some kids are severe enough to require the medication, many just need extra help, coping skills etc and no one seems to want to help. My husband and I have reached out and keep getting smacked w/ the solution to medicate her. Insurance is quick to cover anything that has to do w/ medication ie. that school, but will not cover alternative companies to help the kids...why???? MONEY!!!! The doctors and insurance get paid by the drug manufacturers to prescribe these meds. That is probably why that school won't take my daughter unless they are allowed to medicate her..because they get paid to do so..and the insurance probably won't cover her to attend there unless drug companies are involved. THAT IS WHY doctors do not recommend alternative methods....We as parents have to go out and find them ourselves and the alternative groups such as this one have to announce their services as advertisements. BUT so do the drug companies...look in a magazines geared towards parents/children and you will find ads for drug cures for your kids. It is ALL one big experiment. I am choosing to use the methods that will possibly help change my daughters brain for the better and not cause future harm and side affects which will only be met w/ more meds to counter those symptoms. For the parents who choose medication...to each his own and you are doing what you feel is best for your own child just please do your research first. For now, this is where I am w/ my family's journey through this minefield (what if feels like). ...more

I picked this book up at the library the other day while looking for something else. I've skimmed it and have not found anything in it that would merit a closer read. There are a ton of checklists and preliminary home diagnostic things but not so much on the treatment side. It is kind of a sales pitch for his treatment center, more than anything else. I'm sure it's helpful for someone out there somewhere, but the preliminary checklists made me conclude that this isn't what we're looking for. When I started reading this book, it appeared really promising. I absolutely agree with the author about our ever changing brain and its functions.I was quite fascinated when he went in depth about how most of our kids with neurological disorders are either right brained or left brained, how the dominant side goes into overdrive to compensate for the underdeveloped side which results in the child's atypical behaviours and challenges.I was pretty much hooked, ready to recommend it to anyone and When I started reading this book, it appeared really promising. First, the causes and reasons behind the imbalance in the brain. He talked about everything under the sun from obesity, bad diet, too much video games and TV,insufficent social interaction, inactivity and absent parenting which sounded alot like the ancient debunked "Refrigerator Mom" theory. Then there were the sporadic testimonials of people with only first names who apparently were cured from their neurological disorders after going through the Brain Balance Program within weeks and months.By this time, I was ready to dump the book but decided to finish it anyways and I did.
I would still recommend it but just be beware that the author has quite cleverly inserted some truth and convincing and emotional stories to make it an interesting read. But it does boil down to the fact that it is basically a lengthy advertisement for his Brain Balance Program. For someone who is new and looking for answers, take it with a grain a salt. ...more

I was intrigued by this book, and after reading some of the testimonials was hopeful-but after reading it I feel like Melillo is a medicine man selling snake oil. After researching found a lot of his claims aren't backed by legit science and studies. He proports that the major contributors to autism, ADHD, neurobehavioral disorders, anxiety, learning our behavior disorders, etc. are:

Lack of physical exercise
Overweight and obesity
Absentee parenting

This list is a list of scapegoats in my experience.

As a parent who has been trying many things to help some of my special needs kids, I was a bit offended. For example-one son of ours is extremely physically active, is not obese, has a traditional family, and a stay at home mom, has limits on TV and computer, and we try to offer and feed him healthy foods. And he still has problems!

I feel bad for parents to read this and blame themselves or their lifestyles for their children's neurological disorders.

Also, the testimonials and book were heavily promoting his brain balance centers around the country. Not a fan.

The author states that these disabilities are a result of an imbalance in the developing brain; the symptoms vary on the side of the brain that is growing too fast or too slow. The author also states that this is not a disease in which the brain is damaged rather it is an environmentally caused dysfunction that can be corrected through sensory-motor and academic exercises and a change in diet.

Reads much like an infomercial for the Brain Balance program. No new information, mostly just a mash up of other existing things.
