Just because a bunch of people have read negative opinions held by a bunch of other people about any given book or program, it’s really meaningless until you take the time to engage with it and see for yourself. I have two sons whom I enrolled at our local Brain Balance center from 8/2013-11/2013. Anyone who shoots down Melillo's work has not taken the time to do a firsthand observation of those in the program. It has been truly life-changing for us. Robert Melillo is a chiropractor with additional courses taken in neurology, thus making him a board-certifed "chiropractic neurologist". He has worked with over 1000 children, and claims to have the cure for ALL neurological disorders, from autism to schizophrenia, all based on the idea of "brain balance", or communication between the two hemispheres of the brain. Several "Brain Balance Centers" have opened up around the country, and I cringe to think how much money parents are paying for these Robert Melillo is a chiropractor with additional courses taken in neurology, thus making him a board-certifed "chiropractic neurologist". Several "Brain Balance Centers" have opened up around the country, and I cringe to think how much money parents are paying for these treatments that purport to be the panacea for all known neurological ailments in children. None of his claims are based on empirical, scientific, clinically-controlled studies, but on anecdotal reports from satisfied parents who are thrilled that their child is now on the honor roll, interested in rock concerts and wanting to play outside. I do agree in part with his basic tenet, that the brain is "plastic", in other words, it can compensate and repair itself to a degree, and that no child's destiny is ever set in stone. I caution parents to always be leery of anyone or any methodology that claims to "cure" their child of anything. ...moreJan 06, 2014
I am still not done with this, and I will finish it. The first five chapters are salesy, poorly written and cliff hangers in annoying way. It's like reading an informercial about his REVLOUTIONARY CURE FOR AUTISM AND ADHD. He comes across as a quack, because he makes so many claims about why the brain does certain things. In all my studies of neuropsychology, brain development in university studies and the maybe hundreds of books and articles I've read about brain function since college I've I am still not done with this, and I will finish it. In all my studies of neuropsychology, brain development in university studies and the maybe hundreds of books and articles I've read about brain function since college I've never seen claims like this without citing any research. He also was quick to blame autism and other neurological problem on too much TV, two parents working and loads of other crap. Somehow I wanted to stay hooked to see where the infomercial was going. I realized pretty quickly he is not a doctor with any knowledge of neruological disorder etiology, but rather a chiropractor, which wasn't a deal breaker for me. I still wanted to see what he thought he could accomplish. I am open minded.Nov 16, 2009
My husband read this book in the fall of 2009, and felt it answered every question he ever had about our son's autism. I was able to read it before our son's evaluation a few month's later (except for the specific exercises/treatments depending on your diagnosis), and I would consider the material groundbreaking. It explains a lot about the brain, its astounding complexity and infinite potential. We are exited to work on a home program, and see where it takes us.Apr 21, 2013
We are currently going through the Brain Balance Program for our 14 yr old daughter who has Asperger's. We are in week 3 and seeing some early results. This is a MUST READ for anyone who is on the austism spectrum or suffers from dyslexia, add, adhd, and other disorders.Apr 12, 2012
Brilliant, practical, and understandable. Robert Melillo literally wrote the textbook here on the assessment and functional treatment applications for children with Autism, Asperger's, ADD, ADHD, dyslexia, etc. For any parent (or patient) dealing with any sort of neuro-behavioral disorder, THIS IS A MUST!April 21, 2015
I heard about this book from a friend who thought I could use it in my work with kids.Whole ordering process was quick and painless as usual with Overstock. Plus the price was great.Full ReviewSep 19, 2010
This is one of those books that I don't think I'll ever really "finish"; I have referred to it often during the past year. Packed with exercises to help create brain connections in children who need extra developmental intervention to become the best that they can be, it is a great tool to help me help my five year-old in her development.Nov 03, 2012
There are many conflicting reviews of this book. Read it for yourself if you want to learn about an alternative method for helping a child with any of several disorders or learning difficulties.Jun 11, 2013
My one star category is reserved for books that I would like to throw in the trash and this book fits perfectly into that category. I wish I could give it negative stars.Jan 19, 2012
The author makes the seemingly bold claim that a number of neurological conditions are just different manifestations of a single cause: hemispheric imbalance resulting from faulty connectivity in the brain. While that doesn't contradict received wisdom about these disorders, the claim that they can all be literally cured through a single comprehensive intervention smacks of overselling and oversimplification. While that doesn't contradict received wisdom about these disorders, the claim that they can all be literally cured through a single comprehensive intervention smacks of overselling and oversimplification. There is a lot of good advice in here, but short of institutionalization of the young adults with Asperger's with whom I live, implementing - and enforcing - the full regimen of Brain Balance interventions appears quixotic at best, impossible at worst. What's left is a sales pitch for a particularly pricey chiropractic intervention, of which I am instinctually skeptical, along with some sloppily applied behaviorism. I don't doubt the veracity of the powerful cases presented, or the sincerity of Dr. Melillo's work. However, good science is inherently much more tentative and modest in its claims than what is presented here - and relies on the results of controlled research, not anecdotes, to make its case. ...moreDec 04, 2013
I have seen Disconnected Kids described as a marketing book. That was not the intent, and that information came straight from the horses mouth. The reason for the detailed information on the Brain Balance program is so that anyone can duplicate it for free (the assessment is difficult to do, the program is much easier. An assessment costs less than a new TV). Do you know anyone who has spent enormous amounts of money on research only to give away the information for free? I don't. An assessment costs less than a new TV). Do you know anyone who has spent enormous amounts of money on research only to give away the information for free? I don't. The reason that there was not much empirical evidence to start was that it takes time for other institutions to get interested in the topic, raise money for research, get it approved and print it. Be skeptical absolutely, but don't limit yourself when reading reviews of people who haven't put their kids through the program. There are 3rd party peer reviewed articles now, and the program is not a quick fix. It takes a lot of work to change the brain. Dr. Melillo does not own most of these centers. The majority are owned by people who spent 3 months in another city, put their children through Brain Balance, then moved back home to open a center because of the difference it made. Wouldn't it be sad to find out years later, that the treatment worked and it's too late because your child's brain is now fully developed and you only listened to they nay sayers? Traditional medicine wants to treat everyone with drugs, some with horrible side affects and that don't work after a year. It takes time for a new idea/treatment to be accepted. Some doctors still don't recommend vitamins. The knowledge gained in neuroscience is changing so fast now that by the time a textbook is published, it is out of date. We CAN change the brain. It is now well known that learning new information and regular exercise changes neurons. There are other books on Brain Balance, and a ton more information on neuroscience. Be skeptical, but educate yourselves with scientific information, not the opinion of those who have not taken the time to investigate deeper into the subject. I have taken the time not only to research this particular topic, but also how diet affects the brain. The child is tested for food intolerances, not just put on a diet removing generic problematic foods. Intolerances can cause inflammation in the brain, caused by the break down of the blood-brain barrier due to leaky gut syndrome. Remember that we all have different life experiences, education, knowledge and biases when reading reviews. ...moreMay 29, 2013
I am currently reading this book. I am choosing to exhaust every route in helping my 8 year old daughter before considering medication. After my daughters fourth therapy session I was told she may have Bi-Polar disorder. I was recommended a special school to take her to for an assessment. I was recommended a special school to take her to for an assessment. The school seemed perfect because they do hands on therapy during class to teach the kids coping skills, but also medicate the kids. When I told them, however, that I did not want her medicated I was basically told to go somewhere else until I was ready to medicate her. IF they really wanted to help these kids they would offer the therapy w/out the meds as well. And let me just add that they are expensive and partly covered by insurance (I will get back to this). What concerned me most was that across the street from the school was a child study center. I looked them up and they medicate kids who have psych disorders or who are PREDISPOSED to them which I found alarming. I was told my daughter would more than likely be put on mood stabilizers and ADHD types of medications after only the second class which is when she would be assessed by the psych. Then he would give the prescriptions to the nurse and she would let me know what meds to get filled from the pharmacy (through my insurance). I questioned them about why the psych did not first observe the kids and then recommend meds after the assessment AND observation. I was told that the info provided by the parent and docs one time assessment was enough. SO..my point here is that nothing is scientifically proven or a sure thing...I am finding that many of the alternative methods for helping kids are being called fake or the docs being called quacks but those psychiatrists prescribing the meds don't know for sure what will help either and just experiment until they find the right cocktail of drugs to mask the symptoms. While I do believe some kids are severe enough to require the medication, many just need extra help, coping skills etc and no one seems to want to help. My husband and I have reached out and keep getting smacked w/ the solution to medicate her. Insurance is quick to cover anything that has to do w/ medication ie. that school, but will not cover alternative companies to help the kids...why???? MONEY!!!! The doctors and insurance get paid by the drug manufacturers to prescribe these meds. That is probably why that school won't take my daughter unless they are allowed to medicate her..because they get paid to do so..and the insurance probably won't cover her to attend there unless drug companies are involved. THAT IS WHY doctors do not recommend alternative methods....We as parents have to go out and find them ourselves and the alternative groups such as this one have to announce their services as advertisements. BUT so do the drug companies...look in a magazines geared towards parents/children and you will find ads for drug cures for your kids. It is ALL one big experiment. I am choosing to use the methods that will possibly help change my daughters brain for the better and not cause future harm and side affects which will only be met w/ more meds to counter those symptoms. For the parents who choose medication...to each his own and you are doing what you feel is best for your own child just please do your research first. For now, this is where I am w/ my family's journey through this minefield (what if feels like). ...moreJun 17, 2011
If you can get past the Marketing of his Brain Balance Centers it's very good, logical information. I took my child to the center and went through the program. It has made a world of difference! Brain Balance works.Nov 03, 2017
I picked this book up at the library the other day while looking for something else. I've skimmed it and have not found anything in it that would merit a closer read. There are a ton of checklists and preliminary home diagnostic things but not so much on the treatment side. It is kind of a sales pitch for his treatment center, more than anything else. I'm sure it's helpful for someone out there somewhere, but the preliminary checklists made me conclude that this isn't what we're looking for. Also, the dietary advice seems difficult to implement and self-contradictory. Why bother eliminating all that sugar if you're just going to give the kids sugar again in the form of fruit juice?Dec 25, 2016
There's some good stuff in here about motivation, the role of diet in development and behavior, the mind-body connection, the idea of achieving balance, etc., but, sadly, most of this book was salesy and repetitive.Nov 08, 2012
When I started reading this book, it appeared really promising. I absolutely agree with the author about our ever changing brain and its functions.I was quite fascinated when he went in depth about how most of our kids with neurological disorders are either right brained or left brained, how the dominant side goes into overdrive to compensate for the underdeveloped side which results in the child's atypical behaviours and challenges.I was pretty much hooked, ready to recommend it to anyone and When I started reading this book, it appeared really promising. I was intrigued by this book, and after reading some of the testimonials was hopeful-but after reading it I feel like Melillo is a medicine man selling snake oil. After researching found a lot of his claims aren't backed by legit science and studies. He proports that the major contributors to autism, ADHD, neurobehavioral disorders, anxiety, learning our behavior disorders, etc. are:Dec 12, 2012

There was loads and loads of information in this, which makes some sense to me. I found it rather insightful and agree with others in respect of it being somewhat contradictory to scientific data pertaining to autism in particular. However, that being said... It does offer up some good techniques and advice. As one whom works closely with a teen struggling through these challenges... I feel that each person can only apply a small percentage of the techniques learned as every home, place of work, etc, presents a varied element.Feb 25, 2011
Reads much like an infomercial for the Brain Balance program. No new information, mostly just a mash up of other existing things. I've got a client who is going through the 12 week program right now so I'm trying not to pass judgment until she is finished. Right now I'm very skeptical that it will be worth the out of pocket expense.Take your time and choose the perfect book.
