Der Mond: The Art of Neon Genesis Evangelion is just one of the many books on the popular anime. Many of them are in Japanese. This is one that's translated to English by publisher Viz Media. It's a larger than usual art book, hardcover, 120 pages and reads from right to left.

It collects the art of Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (貞本 義行), the Japanese artist who created the characters for Evangelion. The pages are filled with huge beautiful prints. If you collect the manga series, you'll find some pieces familiar because they are the chapter splash pages. Most of the art are character based, and there are also some sketches which I like.

It's not all Evangelion art though. Towards the back there are also illustrations from other projects like games and other anime. The only I recognise is Fatal Fury fighting game. The others are The Wings of Honneamise, Leiqunni Nondelaiko, Nadia of the Mysterious Seas, Aoki Uru and others. There's even an album cover for Eric Clapton.

There isn't any commentary beside the credits for the illustrations.

Nice book for the anime and manga fans of the series. ...more

If you know Neon Genesis Evangelion then you need no introduction to this book - it contains many set pieces of the characters from the Anime series which defined the genre. If youre a fan of Sadamotos style at all, this is a really beautiful collection of his original paintings/artworks. I particularly liked the early renditions of the Eva characters, before they reached their final forms. Fans of Neon Genesis Evangelion--and who isn't?--might recognize this name as being one of the men responsible for the anime and writer of the ongoing manga adaptation. This oversized book is a collection of various pictures he's done, primarily during the EVA period, though there are a few other pictures added in (including his cover for an Eric Claption album, of all things).

It's nice to see some of these stills in a larger-than-life format, particularly ones that were used for filler pages on the manga. He does really amazing detail work on the art, which you don't get to see as much in the shrunk-for-manga-digest size. There are also character sketch pages for many of the EVA characters, including Shinji and his father.

Perhaps the best thing about this book, though, is for showing to people who tend to dismiss the artwork that goes on in manga and give them a new appreciation for it. That's definitely what I'd do with it.

Sadamoto, in the back of the book, explains where all the various pieces are from. It's a shame there wasn't more about this, the notes are more like one-sentence offhanded comments. He does think this was a stagnant period for him, oddly enough. If only a lot of artists could be so "stagnant!"

This won't take you long to page through, but it's a nice thing to have as a companion piece to the EVA works. I'd definitely buy a copy if I found one. (Library, 07/08)
