From the time I was in grade school I have enjoyed embellishing my handwriting. I like adding little flourishes and writing certain words. I have on occasion (though not in many years) addressed envelopes for friends for special events. But for some time now I have not been doing much hand lettering- other than grocery lists (why does my family have to eat EVERY SINGLE NIGHT?) and quick notes to family, teachers, and co-workers. I just do not write much anymore. This summer one of things I am working on with our youngest is hand writing. His is ATROCIOUS. I told him I would practice with him and picked this book up for inspiration (he has a workbook b/c I CAN'T EVEN).

I love this book! There are exercises to help you practice different types of hand lettering:

The tips actually work and after just a few practice sessions I can see a difference in my handwriting. There are different mediums that are highlighted: chalk, porcelain pins, & even water colours (but also just pens, markers, and pencils). I also liked some of the projects: gift tags, temporary tattoos, and a table centerpiece.

A great book for newbies to lettering. Explains the how-to's pretty darn well, and encourages practice. There are blank practice pages in the book, good if you purchase it rather than check it out from the library, but I'm not sure it was the best use of pages unless you want to crack the spine to make it stay flat. I'd just use another sheet of paper. :)

Really pretty and fun. However, since it covers a few different art styles on lettering like calligraphy and chalk lettering, don't expect an in-depth art book on the techniques. Probably great when looking for inspiration.

Would be great for someone with more knowledge (and money to spend on supplies). I assumed it was more basic than it was but will be good once I get a better grasp on the skills!

More like "projects to make while tracing fonts." I don't know, maybe it's because I do hand-lettering myself but I feel like this is really elementary. I guess for someone who is intimidated about creating their own alphabets it's a start. Also, the bit about dropcaps does not give any visual examples of dropcaps. When you have a bunch of caps in a row making a word and one of them isn't dropped, it's not a dropcap, it's just a cap. Just saying.

This was a pretty mediocre overview without actually teaching much of anything. I feel like it was the book version of a Pinterest board with craft ideas.

What a fun book! This is a great introduction to calligraphy and hand lettering. It gives a broad overview of different styles and applications of modern calligraphy, and a large number of potential project ideas.

The projects given help you think a little bit outside the box, offering instructions for writing on mugs and plates, for doing chalked or painted calligraphy, and even for digitizing your new creation for online use.

The limitations of the book are that there are not a lot of alphabets presented, and somewhat limited technical instruction on cursive calligraphy forms. You won't, for example, find an in-depth stroke guide for the Copperplate alphabet they give, and you'll want to look elsewhere for further instruction on developing your pointed pen technique.

These things being said, however, this book is an excellent starting point for your calligraphy journey! If you have a little more experience, it proves itself a good resource for a fresh set of project ideas, along with some guides on how to branch out into other media you may not have tried. ...more

I didn't love this. There were some good examples, but the book doesn't lie flat at all so it's kind of annoying to prop it up next to your sketchbook. It doesn't really go into theory either so I feel like the aim is to kind of just copy what you see done in the book which wasn't appealing to me. A lot of emphasis on practical applications and materials, but that aspect isn't done as successfully as it is in Doris Wai's Extraordinary Hand Lettering: Creative Lettering Ideas for Celebrations, I didn't love this. Nice introductory primer on lettering, though I would have personally liked to see more techniques and fonts than the projects. Some of the projects, like the watercolor tags, were neat, but I would have liked to see more instruction. I liked that this showed different ways to decorate fonts and the examples used. This was a library book so I couldn't use the practice pages, but they were a nice touch.

I guess this is a good book to start with if you are absolutely a beginner. I was a bit tentative reading this when I realized it's a Walter Foster book and my fears materialized. Lots of examples but not much in the way of design theory - so unless you are already talented and have a creative eye, I believe much of what will happen will be illegible - like many of the examples. Explore with caution.

Although I am not a super fan of the styles used by the writers (these styles have been seen and done for so many people...), I really enjoyed the processes, materials and solutions they give. Also, it's good to have space in the book to experiment.

Excellent book on the fun and personalized art of hand lettering. A bit of 'how to' and a lot of suggestion and variations, includes how to do set-ups for quotes/sentences and working in water and chalk media. Good general reference book for the beginner.

I look forward to using this as a reference. My one complaint is that the practice pages seem impractical since the book binding prevents them from laying flat.

Very good intro book on calligraphy. I would have like to have seen spiral binding on this book. There are practice sheets to use in the book and the binding doesn't let the book lay flat.

Having this many authors and subjects in a quite short book (144p) means every author only has a small space to talk about her subject. Some information also gets repeated by a couple of the authors, while they leave a lot of other information untouched. This makes this book a short and inspiring introduction to lettering, but don't expect a lot of in dept information.

Read my complete review & discover the illustrations I made inspired by the book. :)

A fun introduction to calligraphy, illustrated lettering, chalk lettering, and lettering crafts. Covering such a variety of media keeps it pretty basic. It's written in step by step tutorials but occasionally, I found myself wondering, wait, how did she do that?

Mostly the idea is to try it and have fun.

I liked the illustrated lettering section best as it had more of what I was looking for.

The chalk lettering seems like fun and she includes instructions on making your own chalk boards.

A guide to creating beautiful word art and penmanship. Great for the DIYer of many trades. Perfect for someone who loves quotes, writing letters, or anyone obsessed with chalkboard paint. (who isn't right?) I taught myself a lot of hand lettering and calligraphy techniques with this book. It gave some great tips, but some of the topics were pretty surface level. I would have loved to see more information on font pairing, or how to draw/letter some of the more detailed styles. Overall a cool A guide to creating beautiful word art and penmanship. Really fun book with tutorials to learn letters - more for calligraphy. I like all the direction on flourishes, swashes and embellishing. And ribbon lettering looked really fun to learn. Florals and filigree.

The writing on porcelin plates and glass was neat.

Not interested in chalk board art or gift tags.

she mentions getting 300# paper. I didn't know it went that high. I looked it up. . very expensive. I want to try a piece!

I wouldn't mind owning this book.

Still in search of the perfect guide to hand lettering. This one is good, but not what I'm trying to find. It's got sections on different types of lettering, from calligraphy to brush stroke letters. No alphabets, but it does have places to practice and some good tips.

A good book to get started on calligraphy. Lots of good ideas on lettering and writing. This book also gives good instructions on how to write different lettering and offers many pages for practice. A good read.
