Reviews for Cracking the AP World History Exam, 2016 Edition (College Test Preparation):

I would recommend these different books for different types of studying
I bought this book along with the Barron's Review book to assist me in studying for the rather rigorous AP World exam. After successfully completing the course and exam, I would recommend these different books for different types of studying. The Princeton Review is much better used as a review rather than a fact-packed supplemental guide (as I believe Barron's is). Also, this book contains lots of test taking strategies, and how to actually write the 3 types of essays we are required to know how to compose (something I was NOT taught in class!). This portion of the book is much more in depth than the Barron's Review. Overall though, if you're looking for a comprehensive review, go with Barron's; if you just need to refresh major ideas, I highly recommend this one. Either way, these books will help you if you're trying to get a 4 or 5 on the exam!

Not really one star bad, but you shouldn't buy it.
I took the AP World history exam using this book, and, looking back, I don't think the book was very helpful or tailored to the test enough to be of much assistance. Instead of buying this book, I would suggest buying Barron's because it has more helpful review and makes more sense.

one last word of advice: when you're taking an AP test, don't automatically buy the book from the brand that has helped you most in the past. Look through a bunch of brands and see which is the best for that particular test. For example, I love the Barron's history books, but I liked the princeton review's AP human geo book much better than the one Barron's came out with.

Simply the BEST!!
This is the best review and APWH test preparation that exists!! You will enjoy the style and the voice of the author, and this review will not be dry or boring like your textbook may be ;-)... The sample tests are very similar to the real APWH exam, which is NOT true of any of the other review books. This is not to say that you should substitute this review book for studying your notes and reading your text, because that will not work well for you, but it is a great memory jogger and maybe a great way to help you understand the most important trends and relationships that your textbook covers in more depth. Buy it if you plan to take the AP Exam!!!

I took the AP World History test in 2011 and I credit this book for helping me get a 5! I picked up the 2009 edition from Half Price books at the beginning of the school year and read it in the weeks leading up to the test (not like I had a choice though, my teacher actually required us to read it) and it was a HUGE help. The authors worded things in a way that was easy for me to understand and oftentimes amusing (for example, when they were talking about how Commodore Matthew Perry opened up I took the AP World History test in 2011 and I credit this book for helping me get a 5! The authors worded things in a way that was easy for me to understand and oftentimes amusing (for example, when they were talking about how Commodore Matthew Perry opened up Japan to trade, they added in parentheses after his name: "not the one from Friends". I laughed). The history review was very helpful itself; the outlines at the beginning of each chapter helped me find what I was looking for fairly quickly, and the gray boxes helped me focus on the important concepts of each time period (I'm pretty sure one of the essays I had to write pertained exactly to information inside one of those gray boxes). Also, being a visual person, the maps, graphs, charts, and timelines helped me better understand what was going on and helped me chronologically organize everything in my brain. I HIGHLY recommend this book if you are planning to take the WHAP exam. :)

PS: I actually liked this book so much that I still have it, even though I've already taken the WHAP test. Is that weird? Maybe it's just because I'm kind of a history buff. Oh well. ...more

Good!
This book is does a pretty good job reviewing all the information you need. I read through it twice, a full month before the exam and the night right before the test. ( Oh so much fun...)

It helps you with understanding the big picture and has some tough practice exams. The way the author writes is very easy to understand. The timelines at the end of each chapter were pretty helpful, though it did not have any review questions.

You should actually read through this book more than just 2 times; I had trouble remembering everything on the test.

Good study book!!!( Ended up getting a 4, considering I though I would fail it)

Well Worth Your Time
I've prepared for many standardized tests over the years, and almost always, the Princeton Review study guides are among my favorites. This particular guide was recommended by my teacher, and in complete honesty, I am very impressed by how useful and friendly it was.

Not only does the book explain how to tackle each section of the exam, but it also includes a concise review of each time period (8000 BCE - 600 CE; 600 - 1450; 1450 - 1750; 1750 - 1914; 1914 - Present). The writing style is conversational and easily understandable--completely different from a normal textbook. Plus, there's a timeline of major developments at the end of each chapter. What helped me a lot was the special boxes throughout the text that hi-lighted major patterns/ideas (e.g. "Compare Them: The Aztec Civilization and the Roman Empire," how both the Protestant Reformation and Scientific Revolution greatly impacted the Church, etc).

I have to say that one or two of the Princeton Review's practice questions seemed a little bit strange. Over all, though, going through the practice multiple choice questions definitely prepared me, and I also think this study guide contributed to my very high A in the class. Plus, I took the AP exam about two or three weeks ago, and partly thanks to this book, the exam seemed fairly easy. (Of course, I haven't received my scores yet...)

Although this book isn't perfect, it comes pretty close. If you know you want a study guide, the Princeton Review is probably your best choice.

As a previous reviewer noticed, there are reviews for this 2016 Edition dated 2011. That is unsatisfactory.

So I usually don't rate books like this as a rule, but I think my recent inactivity warrants it.

I bought this book on a whim online. I'm usually very confident academically when it comes to the social sciences, but I was feeling anxious since this was my first AP exam and being a chronic overachiever, I wanted to ensure success.

Now, this book isn't excessively detailed, and probably not beneficial for self-studiers or those who haven't yet taken the course. But for me, it was ideal. I needed strengthening the "big-picture" of each period, and some obscure details (Julia you better be grateful for me mentioning the Bantu migrations on our way to the library to take the exam) that my somewhat inexperienced teacher hadn't covered in class. I didn't really read the essays portion, since that was my strongest area, but from I've heard it helps.

So while I can't completely attribute my getting a 5 to reviewing this book, it definitely boosted my chances. ...more

Can I even begin to tell you how AWESOME this book was? I had a really good teacher this year, but the textbook was incredibly dry and the only book I've ever fallen asleep on because I was bored, rather than I was tired. And I was freaking out about the exam.
So I got this.
And loved it.
While still freaking out, it was one of the few times history actually held at least some interest to me. It did a marvelous job of grouping and explaining, and it had a sense of humor too. We have yet to see if I pass or not, but either way, I credit everything to this book!
(And I have no idea why I'm posting it on goodreads.) ...more
