Reviews for Cracking the AP World History Exam, 2013 Edition (College Test Preparation):

From a teacher who is teaching this AP course: No questions after each section? WOW. That sucks.
I purchased this book as part of my own personal collection for a class I'm currently teaching. I was HORRIFIED to see that there were no review questions after each section. As a teacher and I would imagine as a student for this difficult AP course, review questions are CRUCIAL to figuring out whether or not you got the gist of each section. To not provide review MCQ style questions is just LAZY on Princeton Review's part.

The information is dense and I'm not positive everything is explained really well.

I would NOT recommend this book as an AP World History teacher. I don't really like ANY of the books out there, but for my money, I recommend 5 Steps to a 5 book.

Doe not replace good old-fashioned studying, but can help
I teach AP World History and of all the review guides that I've used, I think PR does the best job relating to the student in a voice that the student will easily follow. The review material is written in a simple language and it gets straight to the big picture ideas. The practice tests are average--not bad, but there are a tone of practice material online. 5 Steps to a 5 has 500 hundred practice questions.

I would also suggest using this book during the course year to help you understand classroom material and some of the chapter readings from the traditional textbook. Buy this and the 5 Steps to a 5 (500 questions addition) together and you should be fine.

I took the AP World History test in 2011 and I credit this book for helping me get a 5! I picked up the 2009 edition from Half Price books at the beginning of the school year and read it in the weeks leading up to the test (not like I had a choice though, my teacher actually required us to read it) and it was a HUGE help. The authors worded things in a way that was easy for me to understand and oftentimes amusing (for example, when they were talking about how Commodore Matthew Perry opened up I took the AP World History test in 2011 and I credit this book for helping me get a 5! The authors worded things in a way that was easy for me to understand and oftentimes amusing (for example, when they were talking about how Commodore Matthew Perry opened up Japan to trade, they added in parentheses after his name: "not the one from Friends". I laughed). The history review was very helpful itself; the outlines at the beginning of each chapter helped me find what I was looking for fairly quickly, and the gray boxes helped me focus on the important concepts of each time period (I'm pretty sure one of the essays I had to write pertained exactly to information inside one of those gray boxes). Also, being a visual person, the maps, graphs, charts, and timelines helped me better understand what was going on and helped me chronologically organize everything in my brain. I HIGHLY recommend this book if you are planning to take the WHAP exam. :)

PS: I actually liked this book so much that I still have it, even though I've already taken the WHAP test. Is that weird? Maybe it's just because I'm kind of a history buff. Oh well. ...more

Pro and Con
The book is very readable compared to the monotonous feeling of other review books for world history. However, while their 2012 edition had 4 answer choices per question to reflect the change in the exam (a-d), this book reverts back to the A-E choices, which makes no sense. Also, the questions aren't really an accurate representation of the questions on the exam. But the review section is good.

So I usually don't rate books like this as a rule, but I think my recent inactivity warrants it.

I bought this book on a whim online. I'm usually very confident academically when it comes to the social sciences, but I was feeling anxious since this was my first AP exam and being a chronic overachiever, I wanted to ensure success.

Now, this book isn't excessively detailed, and probably not beneficial for self-studiers or those who haven't yet taken the course. But for me, it was ideal. I needed strengthening the "big-picture" of each period, and some obscure details (Julia you better be grateful for me mentioning the Bantu migrations on our way to the library to take the exam) that my somewhat inexperienced teacher hadn't covered in class. I didn't really read the essays portion, since that was my strongest area, but from I've heard it helps.

So while I can't completely attribute my getting a 5 to reviewing this book, it definitely boosted my chances. ...more

Can I even begin to tell you how AWESOME this book was? I had a really good teacher this year, but the textbook was incredibly dry and the only book I've ever fallen asleep on because I was bored, rather than I was tired. And I was freaking out about the exam.
So I got this.
And loved it.
While still freaking out, it was one of the few times history actually held at least some interest to me. It did a marvelous job of grouping and explaining, and it had a sense of humor too. We have yet to see if I pass or not, but either way, I credit everything to this book!
(And I have no idea why I'm posting it on goodreads.) ...more

This was useful for my son
This was useful for my son. I don't believe he read cover to cover, but rather picked the sections out that he knew he would struggle with on the exam. Was very helpful to him and scored well on his test!

AP Review
I bought this book a couple months ago for my AP review class and it really breaks down the information in a way that's easy to understand. It even has some funny jokes and puns which makes it even more fun to read :) I would recommend this if you're taking AP or need to brush up on world history information.

Really Helped!!!
I really should have reviewed this WHAP test prep book earlier because it really helped me prepare and score a 3 on the AP World History Exam. The practice test questions where helpful and the information within the book was invaluable for helping me study for the Test.

Great for the big picture/concepts
The great thing about this book is that it's more concept-oriented than detail-oriented, which I find very suitable for the AP exam, especially for the essay section.

There is a chapter layout at the beginning of each chapter telling you the big chunks of what you're going to learn before you dive in, so you're not left in the dark.

There are also timelines at the end of each chapter to help you order the big events chronologically.

Furthermore, the lack of excessive detail may seem like a bad thing because you might feel nervous going into the exam not knowing ever little detail, but in terms of efficiency, you're better off spending 10 hours reading through this review than 30 hours reading a detailed review. The long review may give more details, but those extra details will only help on a few, if any, questions. When it comes to AP World, if you know enough about the concepts, you can make very accurate guesses on questions you're not sure about anyways. Plus, the extra hours you would have left over if you chose to use the shorter review would definitely prove to be beneficial, whether you use those hours to take practice tests/essay, or to make flashcards, or to just sleep to give your brain time to rest and heal.

All in all, I feel like the conceptual approach to AP studying is helpful, at least it was for me. I know that if I had just little bits and pieces of info instead of big conceptual chunks, I wouldn't have been able to have solidly structured and comprehensive essays for the exam.

Invaluable!! AP Teachers- REQUIRE your students to buy this! Here's how I use it:
All my students are required to buy this book! At the end of each unit, their assignment is to read that section in the Princeton Guide and tell me what IS in the Princeton Guide that IS NOT in their text book.

Aha! If they read both, their assignment will be quite Short, because all the important facts are here. If they did NOT read their TEXT book, their assignment will drag on and on, so it will be easy for me to correct because the long ones will not have read their text.

The good news is that those who did not read their text WILL be learning information as they do THIS ASSIGNMENT, so it is a Win-win!!

Big help
This book was a big help to my daughter. She used it throughout the year as she was taking the course. She got a 5 on the exam and recommends this book to others.

Just what I needed
I'm bought this book to prep for the AP World Exam a little later than I should have, I had other books but they weren't quite as good as this one prior, glad I got this.

Book met expectations
Student was able to use book to prepare better for AP exam. Not sure this book helped more than the classroom with the subject matter, but it did seem to give the student more confidence going into the exam that she had prepared adequately enought to do well.

Lots if great info. But this type of tutorial needs to break it down in common language . How to get it done... Not how to discover how to get it done.
