artists are wildly successful, while others just barely squeak by? It
may seem like an unfathomable mystery, how some are earning six figures
while other, more talented artists, are struggling. Maria Brophy has
dedicated 20 years of her life to researching the specific strategies
that successful artists follow. After applying these strategies to her

of her own business deals, successes and failures, while sharing
non-conventional wisdom that will explode your art sales. With the
exercises and worksheets included, you can apply the insights to your
own business for immediate results. The tools inside will help you: •
Connect with your right buyers • Increase your $$$ income today • Sell
art easily and negotiate nicely • License your art and get paid multiple
times • Implement powerful money and business practices • Trust your
own creative intuition If you are interested in generating more money
and success from your art, then this book is for you! “A lot of people

who has been able to tell me how, in a viable way.” –Joe Mahoney

Doing the business on art...
I certainly wasn't born with a business mind, much artistic talent or any inclination to surf. So this most Californian of how-to books that focusses on how the author went about selling her surf-loving husband's art should have rubbed me – a cynical Old World Brit who merely dabbles in water colours when he's had too much to drink – up the wrong way. And yet, despite the odd mix of woo-woo spiritualism and crass Yankee commercialism (you have to emanate true love for other people before you can close the deal) I found myself, dare I say it, agreeing with her. After reading this personal guide to negotiating the choppy waters of making a living through creating art I was inspired. OK, I don't have the talent (yet) to make a living from my art, but I do have the tenacity. Put a cork in the wine bottle, and get to work. Business and art don't have to be mutually exclusive. In fact, as you realise the further you get though the book, good art and good business go hand in hand. The bottom line? If you have any desire to make a living from your art, I recommend you read this practical, inspirational book.

A great book for the commercially minded artist
I’m a professional airbrush artist. I’ve always approached my art commercially and having a marketing management background I’m not a newbie to business. However, I’ve always found that marketing and selling art provides unique challenges. My airbrush business really picked up since last year, but now I’m looking to reach a new level. I’ve read Maria’s blog in the past. This book was released at exactly the perfect time for me. It expands on a lot of topics she has written about in her blog, but it’s all in one book and organized in a logical order and there’s a lot more info and background. I love the worksheets at the end of chapters. Some of her advice I was already practicing before I read the book, but I also picked up a lot of great ideas from her book. A big one for me were her chapters on pricing and of course art licensing. What I really like about her book though, is that it’s full of great advice, without the condescending tone of some other art business books I’ve read. I highly recommend this book.

Not Very Good for Startup Artists
I was was originally interested in this book because of the high reviews, but was disappointed that there was no solid advice for getting customers from just starting out. The other thing I was disappointed in was that this is from the standpoint of a marketer, not the artist - another disappointment. Its great that she can market all her husbands stuff while her husband just does art all day but for an artist working full time, trying to market their own stuff and get pieces to sell? This book isn't very helpful. She does have some good advice for artists already selling their work hence the three star.

A Must Have for ALL Artists!
This book is a gold mine for anyone in a creative field, but definitely incredibly helpful for illustration artists like me. I've been freelancing since 2010 doing illustration and graphic design, but I was barely making it. I had no business training whatsoever, but this book was a perfect resource to teach me the ins and outs of the art business and it helped me immensely. Just following Maria's advice to get focused on what I really want to do was super helpful. I realized I didn't enjoy doing graphic design or taking on commissions that didn't mesh with my core values as an artist just to earn a paycheck. Now I only focus on making fantasy illustration and portraits. I'm doing what I love, so the work I'm producing is so much better and people are taking notice. I've implemented so many of the strategies Maria laid out, and I'm finally seeing the success I've yearned for all these years. Suddenly doors are opening and there's more opportunities than I could have ever imagined. I can't thank Maria enough for writing such a heartfelt, insightful book to really help artists achieve their goals and make money doing what they love. A+++++ and a must have for all artists out there!

A view from inside the art marketing trenches
I buy art and business books frequently. While many have very good and practical information, some, like this one, are treasure troves of inside perspective. Few things are as frustrating as reading advice from someone who has not actually accomplished what they are writing about. I've wasted plenty of money listening to "experts" who are really only interested in marketing their marketing materials. It's refreshing to read a book like this detailing specific plans of action and offering practical exercises to help clarify your path.

It's a very substantial review of the tried and true methods of both traditional and guerrilla marketing as well as an honest appraisal of what it takes to succeed. I like that the author suggests that every artist must forge their own artistic and marketing path and style. Additionally, she does a great job using her own challenges to illustrate the roadblocks and solutions that she and her husband discovered along the way.

I'll be re-reading this guide a few more times. I'm sure there are gems I'm missing.

Maria Brophy walks the walk
Maria Brophy is unique in her field of art consulting in that she is actively managing the career of her artist husband in real time and, in that capacity, works firsthand with buyers. She has the conversations, handles the negotiations, deals with the obstacles, just like the artists she consults with. Her experience spans the entire range of buyers from one-on-one collectors to licensees to corporate events. This book inspired me with its positivity, specificity, and practicality. My bookshelf is full of art business books, and I've read them all. THIS is the book I will recommend to friends and fellow artists. Thank you, Maria, for taking the time to collect your thoughts and experiences and gather them into this enormously helpful guide.

One of the most knowledgeable and helpful books I have read.
I am an older artist finally following through on that dream I had when I was a teenager. "Before life got in the way".
I now work my 9-5 come home and paint. I have read many books in the last 2 years about the business end of art, but your book is different. You have included information about the steps involved in this business process, and the ups and Thank of the artist life.
This week I filed about 15 of my works with the Copyright office. Today I am working on setting up the website to sell my originals, and I am also joining FAA to sell reproductions. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, which has helped me on my way. I wish you continue success! Kathy Spadaro

Want to earn a living as an artist - read this first.
Thank you Maria Brophy! Art Money & Success is the book I have been looking for over 20 years - one based on the business of being an artist. Using her guides I've honestly answered the questions of what type of life I want with my art at the center of my income (and it doesn't follow the traditional artist tract). If you create art and if you want to make a good living, this book needs to be in your hands. She walks her talk.

An Excellent (and Practical) Business Book
I bought this book for my wife and she just finished reading it. She said it was one of the most helpful “business books” she’s read in a while. Most of what we read/hear about marketing and growing a business deals with the big picture mindset stuff, which, while definitely important in its own right, doesn't really allow us to take that next step with concrete ideas. We’re at a point where we make steady income that allows us to "get by," but have been stuck on really growing because we’ve lacked more tangible ideas to put into action. Maria offers a lot of this in Art Money Success - along with tons of great informational tidbits - so we definitely highly recommend!

College Doesn’t Teach This!
I have my bachelors degree in Fine Art from a prestigious art school in the United States that I will not name. All through college I remember students asking the professors “How can we make money from our art?” The professors would laugh at us and replied “If you are trying to make money from your art, you should probably seek another profession.” There were never any classes that taught us anything practical about selling art, finding clients, online sales, how to network etc. The only thing they “taught” us was a minimal class on how to try and get into galleries. I graduated 10 years ago and had given up on being a full time artist. I didn’t know how to even find clients. The only people I ever met were unwilling to pay money for artwork. My dream was dead until I found this book. I just finished reading it and I can’t wait to start re-reading it. When I finish my next body of work I will immediately use the techniques from this book. If you are an artist who wants to make a living at what you love, buy this book. I have never read any of this information in any other book about art. Thank you Maria Brophy!!!

Just okay. Doesn't follow through with the right information ...
Just okay. Doesn't follow through with the right information. Inadequate in some ways when it comes to "how" to sell your art. Too broad and totally geared to her husband's career.

Enjoyable Read
The author's enthusiasm comes through loud and clear. The only drawback is the book is focused almost solely on what she did for her husband's unique niche. Great to any artist who is confused about their niche and needs focus. Not so good for someone looking for a game plan - unless you want to buy her consulting services or other products. Not what I was looking for but good book nonetheless

Very Informative
Lots of useful info on making a living as an artist. I bookmarked and highlighted more than a few pages, and will be referring back to them.
I'll have to come back and give this book a proper review once I've applied some of the tips within.

Engaging, practical, has work exercises
I'm a professional artist- and have found this helpful so far, I'm on chapter 3. I'm doing the exercises she recommends. The font is a nice readable size, the quality of paper etc is good. She writes some about her husband who is known for illustrating surfboards and does other "spiritual geometry" art and such. Practical and engaging. Recommended.

Great product
Good product! I put mine in my wood stove to cook off any residual cast wax then I seasoned the whole thing while it was still very hot. I love it! I use it for humidifier on my wood stove so occasionally I have to re-season it to prevent rust. but that is totally normal!

Excellent
Excellent.

I met Maria and Drew Brophy over ten years ago at Drew's first paint-pen seminar, and was immediately taken by how generous they were with sharing such valuable information; their own tried-and-true experience. Years later, Maria's book is a seasoned reflection of that and more.

The book is informative and written in a manner that's easy to follow, and enables the artist become confident (even friendly) with whatever business jargon/terms may arise. Most importantly, it shows how to work respectfully with potentially challenging licensing situations without compromising the integrity of those involved -- most of all, the artist.

Most artists keep their methods and success secrets fiercely confidential. This is the exact opposite; open, warm, and a genuine reminder that the artist community is just that -- a community. It encourages the one thing that is the ultimate key to an artist's success: sharing your work --how will anyone else see it?-- and how to do it right.

Thank you, Maria!

Pound-for-Pound, the Most Valuable Book I Have Ever Purchased
The audiobook was SO VALUABLE that I had to keep pausing my workout machine to jump off and take notes! Seriously, I have notes all over the back of my workout charts and I don't really mind at all. LOVE THIS BOOK. I am definitely ordering the hardcopy for quick reference as my challenges change. Maria really does cover all the ground you will want to know to either get started or tune-up your art business.

This "nice girl" finally feels like she can discuss all of the contractual details of the art business without feeling guilty. Thank you for putting it all into a point of view that makes sense.

This is, pound-for-pound, the most valuable book I have ever purchased. I realize that sounds over the top, but this is the stuff no one teaches you in college, or even after. And I was raised by entrepreneur craftsmen! Both my parents had businesses, but the specific "ins-and-outs" of setting myself up as a working artist always eluded me. I didn't even really know what questions to ask them. I'll be listening to this again. If you are an artist who wants your art to be more than a hobby, you owe it to yourself to get this book.
