In tune with today's readers–rich but never
effete
–this is the art history book of choice for a
new generation. Presenting a broad view of art through the centuries, it
sympathetically and positively introduces the works of all artists.
This includes women, artists of color, and the arts of other continents
and regions, as well as those of Western Europe and the United States.
The new edition contains even more full-color reproductions, larger
images, redrawn maps and timelines, and new photographs and higher
quality images. Balancing both the traditions of art history and new
trends of the present, Art History is the most comprehensive,
accessible, and magnificently illustrated work of its kind.
Broad in scope and depth, this beautifully illustrated work features art
from the following time periods and places: prehistoric art in Europe;
ancient art of the Near East, Egypt, the Aegean, and Greece; Roman and
Etruscan art; Jewish, early Christian, and Byzantine art; Islamic art;
art from ancient India, China, Japan, and the Americas; medieval art in
Europe; Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance art; Baroque art; art of the
Pacific cultures; the rise of modern art; and the international
Avant-Garde since 1945. An excellent reference work and
beautiful edition for any visual artist.

Reviews for Art History, Combined (3rd Edition):

A Very Thorough Book, Only for Reference
The book is perhaps one of the most thorough art history books ever printed. It goes through a long art history, and is filled with many art pictures that complement the text. But when I was reading this for an art history course, the length was something of a problem. This book would be okay as a coffeetable book. However, the language, is somewhat too wordy and upscale. Still, a good book to have in a book collection.

While I have always been interested in the history of art, I really didn’t know much about the subject. In order to rectify that fact, a few years ago I went in search of a good introductory book. After some research, I ended up picking up a copy of Marilyn Stokstad’s two-volume set, and I have been picking my way through it ever since, finally polishing volume two off earlier this week.

Art History is designed as textbook for art history courses, and it can read like a textbook at times (albeit an engaging one). However, it has plenty to offer the general reader. The book is extremely comprehensive, covering artwork from prehistoric cave paintings through the modern and post-modern era. While plenty of space is devoted to Western artwork, Stokstad also spends time discussing artwork from all over the world. While the emphasis is on painting and sculpture, a significant amount of time is spent on architectural development as well. The book is chock-full of high quality, color photographs of the artwork under discussion, which was an important factor for me. While the writing is simple and direct (again, think textbook), Stokstad writes clearly and does a good job of explaining the importance of artistic movements and concepts for the layman.

With a scope this large, Art History is forced to march pretty quickly through some major artists and time periods that I would have liked to see covered in greater depth. But as an introductory volume this was very effective and informative, and if it left me wanting to know more about specific artists and their careers, then perhaps it did its job. 4.0 stars, recommended! ...more

It's huge, very heavy. Had to read the whole book (except architecture) for a 1 year docent class. Great resource -- but too big to carry to a class!!

Art History
to be purchased with Hartt's volumes on Art History. it creates a very useful coupling and very agile in quick consultation, something to get the initial appetite to then satisfy with more specialized readings.

it does provide - though - quintessential tools on architecture nomenclature - necessary to study

mankind needs art
I minored in history. boring for most. BUT this text showed how art was preceived in each period. I especially liked the one page time line comparing what was going on in other cultures.

this text included previously ignored cultures.

This book delves deep into the history of art and covers, to varying degrees, all continents and most historical periods. With hundreds of pictures, including paintings, architecture and landscapes.

As much as I enjoyed it, the newer edition goes for ~$130 on Amazon.com, which I find ridiculous. I got mine second hand.

A masterpiece
For those looking for an introduction to art, this is an "ivy league" level survey to the most important aspects of art. Each chapter is well written, has historical background material, and is adorned with beautiful pictures (colour and monochrome). In this two volume set presented in a sleeve the books have a canvas like yellow binding (well made) and are a bit heavy but not unmanageable. Expect topics to be presented in the major parts of the world (Europe, Africa etc) in different time sequences. At the current prices (about $10) you cannot do better.

For UNT art history 1
A great read! Tons of information I haven't noticed until now. I knew only a fraction of the information before hand and this does a great job bridging it all together. Good for basic introduction into art history. For a master's program find something else.

Oh, the sorrows...
Great book for my art history class, big and now sits on my book shelf... why, because the person in which I bought this from gave me the teachers edition- which you're not suppose to do, so I couldn't return it back to the book store after I bought it. So now I have this art book for an art class I had in under grad school (about 4 years ago) (I got an A+ in the class btw :) ) that chances are I will no longer use again. I guess it's there to make me looked more cultured. hahaha

Classic Art History
This is a great resource for art history and was even used when I was a docent in training at a local art museum. It is heavy--so not something you lug around, but it is a classic.

Poor
Although the text itself is in good condition, the cover of the book is torn and the binding is torn down the spine. There are also comments written on the pages surrounding many of the pictures. None of this information was disclosed in the description.
