Suzanne Somers..Bioidentical Hormones and feeling FAB!!
Suzanne Somers rocks! This lady is brilliant snd has done all the research and footwork about bioidentical hormones and aging for you. All you have to do is read the book and apply it! I read the book, did my own research (just because I want to confirm things before I add new products into my system) then I ran (ok well ..walked really fast :) to my doctor and got on bioidentical creams which my doctor ordered from a special compound pharmacy. Going on 3rd month..still adjusting amounts, but feeling..and looking more youthful. And hey not one single hotflash! I don't have RX insurance but my compounded plant based estrogen/progesterone cream only costs me $55 a month..well worth it.
NOTE: Do not let your doctor talk you into hormone pills, injections, patches or pellets instead of topical creams..research shows they don't work as well and they have to go through your liver, which can be inefficient and hard to regulate..even dangerous. Do your own research on this. Its important to do your own research so you can have an informed discussion with your doctor. Always check with your doctor..each individual is very different.

A place to start! Very informative
Never been a fan of Suzanne Somers, however, a dear friend recommended this book. I took this book for what it was, enlightenment and a huge contrast from medical jargon. It really opened my eyes to the way our hormones rely on each other to keep us in tune, and the way inside and outside elements cause depletion of hormones. I have been using bio-medicals for years after a hysterectomy. I am not 100%, but so much better than I was. I am using this book to tweak whatever it is I feel I'm lacking, (which as of late is low tolerance for stupid people, with no common sense.)

Negative reviews about it being an infomercial? Whatever. It is about researching, based on her life issues. She says it over, and over. She is not pushing people to do anything, but to research for themselves to better their personal well being. This is information that needs to be passed down to male and female alike. Wish my mom(s) had the data back then to give to me. I would be so much better off than I am now. And yes. It does cost to be healthy. It is worth it.

High hormones are no better than low ones
This is an informative book on a controversial subject. I thought I had found the answers in this book! However, bBeing a person who is of the average working class with company provided health care insurance, my only critique of the advice Ms. Somers offers is this: Normal health insurance (at least the kind I have) pays very little, or next to nothing for compounded pharmaceuticals. Plus, insurance pays next to nothing for the hormone testing panels to see where your levels are. I had to spit in containers, freeze them, and send the saliva off to a lab miles away. It cost 250$ out of pocket. Since you are taking hormones that are not created by your own body, they fluxuate all over the place. So if you cannot afford to have the testing panels done regularly to monitor them and adjust the medication, and you do not have time to run back and forth to the doctor’s office… and, your feel awkward spitting into vials while you are at work, then the whole process becomes pretty monotonous, and VERY expensive, and pretty much mute! Plus, I had a very hard time finding a doctor in my area that believes in the bio-identicals period. NOT ALL OF US HAVE THE RESOURCES SUSANNE SOMERS HAS!

Suzanne is a liar
Suzanne Somers is a liar! I wouldn't believe anything she says. Based on her book Ageless, I allowed my doctor to prescribe bio-identical hormones because Suzanne claimed they are different and never have caused cancer. Well, I'm here to tell you that is NOT true! After 4 yrs on bio-identicals, I developed breast cancer. Two different doctors said it was an estrogen-fed cancer. I threw those bio-identicals into the garbage, right alongside Suzanne Somers' book.

So thankful for this information!
I'm so thankful for Suzanne's dedication to bringing information out about BHRT. I ran across her television show by accident and downloaded her book the same day. As soon as I finished reading it (that same weekend) I read The Sexy Years. I found a doctor in my general area that specializes in this hormone therapy and got my lab work done. I was not surprised by my lack of hormones because I had not been producing them for several years but I was surprised by other issues related to thyroid, insulin levels and cholesterol that needed immediate attention to prevent more serious problems in the near future.

I am now headed down a positive path toward a healthy and energetic future instead of the steady decline I've been experiencing over the past several years. I'm so glad I followed my 'hunch' to watch Suzanne's show, read her books and follow up with a doctor that specializes in this area and understands what i need to live a quality life.

You have nothing to lose and so much to gain.

Suzanne saved my life
I read this book after seeing SS on Oprah in 2009. I credit this book with literally saving my life. I was not going through menopause gracefully and thought I was losing my mind and suffering horribly. I went to one of her recommended docs and the rest is history. I feel great, but it would not have happened without Suzanne Somers stellar research and stubborn persistence to discover the real truth about hormones and aging. Thank you Suzanne!

Found Myself Far More Impressed Than I Thought...
I thought Suzanne’s book was well written, very concise, and perhaps most significantly, informative. I am a consumer of BHRT, and in my particular case would not consider avoiding natural hormones. That said, as with so many things, evaluating your health profile to determine if it is appropriate is essential. If you have a family history of breast or uterine cancer, it is probably best to avoid BHRT. If you are predisposed to problems with uterine fibroids, be very cautious, as estrogen dominance must be avoided. Your doctor can help you determine whether you are a candidate for BHRT. In my case, I like the cardio protective aspect of elevated HDL cholesterol that stems from BHRT. The ability to sleep better and avoid night sweats is a real plus. Perhaps more than anything I take BHRT to preserve my bone mass. Nothing helps preserve your bones like BHRT, which is extraordinarily important if you lean towards osteopenia, or worse osteoporosis.

Missing something
Great book that was way before it's time but I wish there was a chapter about affording these fancy doctors. Most if not all do not accept insurance. Or insurance does not pay for most bioidentical hormone therapies. And that most conventional doctors desperately need to be educated about this subject.

I would've loved to have seen a chapter of Suzanne chastising physicians, medical schools and insurance companies for not being on top of this and in not so doing contributing to keeping millions of ordinary people feeling unwell.

That being said, well done Suzanne for being years ahead of conventional medicine!

Very helpful - our biological mysteries solved!
Though I have read other books on bioidentical hormones, this one is SUPER! Suzanne's open honesty about her own journey is combined with informative interviews with MD's that have gone beyond the model of Western medicine. It is fascinating to see so many top notch doctors and surgeons that finally realized that their medical model was not enough and were inspired to question further.

The advice is mind opening, easy to read, and has many practical hints. The doctors carefully explain the difference between synthetic hormones (such as Premarin) and the bioidentical ones. The moral is that the loss of hormones is what ages us and that, in modern society, where we have long life expectancies, we may choose to supplement the hormones we have lost so that we do not feel the negative effects of aging.

I read this book cover to cover in a week, which has not happened in many years! I am now buying copies for all my friends.

I've been on biohormones for a long time largely due to info from sS. I use Wiley protocol tho & she uses other things like HGH (which I won't use) and Iscador (which we can get or afford. Good info tho. Read and learn or be old & sick

This one hit my favorite meter! Suzanne did an excellent job compiling information, interviewing doctors (with summaries at the end of each interview), a few patient stories, information on male menopause (andropause), yoga, beauty (good haircut, makeup, dressing)--not plastic surgery.

Our meat and dairy products are full of synthetic hormones and other chemicals and our fruits and veggies are loaded with pesticides and This one hit my favorite meter! Suzanne did an excellent job compiling information, interviewing doctors (with summaries at the end of each interview), a few patient stories, information on male menopause (andropause), yoga, beauty (good haircut, makeup, dressing)--not plastic surgery.

Throughout the book there are mentions of how U.S. food is poisoning us. Our meat and dairy products are full of synthetic hormones and other chemicals and our fruits and veggies are loaded with pesticides and other chemicals. Did you know that the entire European continent will not import our meat because of the harmful stuff we put in it? Some of our fruits have lost their flavor while in other countries their fruit and veggies enhance more meals because they are tastier and less harmful.

There is a patient story who became a strict vegetarian and how sick she became because our bodies were meant to consume meat--in small portions. Just have to find "real" meat and watch our portions.

Our fish (tuna, swordfish, etc) are also contaminated with dangerous levels of mercury. They get it because they are eating the small fish that hang out in our rivers that go to the ocean.

There's a section on the harmful effects of our environment, too. We are poisoning ourselves! Recently, there has been an increase in breast cancer in China and found it was not due to their diet, but their pollution. It matters.

Did you know that in European countries doctors practice homeopathy first, then, if necessary, they prescribe drugs as a last resort?

Suzanne mentions in several places that she is NOT anti-drug. She believes that in some instances a drug is the best course of action, but it shouldn't be our first course.

We have harmed ourselves by going to doctors demanding antibiotics for every cold, sniffle, etc. Taking motrin and tylenol, heck, using fluoride are not good for us. There are alternative methods that are healthier.

The importance of sleep is mentioned in numerous places. Getting to bed between 9 and 10 pm is a must and sleeping in total darkness turns on the much needed melatonin which not only allows us to sleep, but has many antioxidant properties. Melatonin is not available over the counter in Canada...It is a hormone.

She explains vitamins and the RDA's, etc. I was surprised that most multivitamins have extremely low RDA's. Bare minimums. Not near enough. The RDA for Vitamin D says 400 but in today's environment we need 1000. I heard this from my pharmacist, too and glad it was mentioned in this book. Always like to double (triple) check what I'm told...

Once again, this book blasts the drug companies for running our healthcare system. A person she interviewed mentioned that it started by the Carnegies and Rockefellers...and now the drug companies are locked in to our health system and because they cannot patent what is natural to our environment (and more healthy for us), they push their drugs--no matter the harmful side affects--to doctors who have grown to rely on them for advice, guidance and direction. What a shame.

I enjoyed reading the ideas and alternative medical testing that should be done for our health. Good luck finding a doctor near you who a) understands and uses these methods and b) your insurance covers it. Depends on the state you live in. Right now 14 states seem to be on the cutting-edge of medicine. The rest...not so much.

A senator in North Carolina had Parkinson's and went to a homeopathy doctor and was able to walk again. He told his story to the state legislature and they passed laws allowing homeopathy to be practiced in that state without constant supervision by non-homeopathy practitioners.

One doctor tells about the harmful affects of mammograms that has been at the back of my mind. There are thermoscans that are both better at detection and don't cause a tiny cancer to bloom by getting a mammogram. Yet this is not our "standard-of-care." Shocking.

When we get tests done that come back "normal" that may mean they are "normal" for what has become excepted for that age. Not normal in that we are in the optimal range. Cutting-edge doctors use natural methods and supplements to not just prolong our lives but improve and maintain our quality of life. It is not about stopping aging, but aging and maintaining a healthy life. Our bodies can do this.

Age with a smile and what a great time this can be!

There are newer, more advanced and less evasive methods that can actually serve us better, but most doctors don't do it or know about it because they haven't stayed current with the changing way of medicine. Slowly, very slowly, U.S. doctors are coming around and looks like medical schools are starting to teach more about treating the whole body and not MASKING one specific symptom with a drug that has a slew of side affects.

Throughout this book there are harmful examples of anti-depressants and I recommend this to EVERYONE--men and women. ...more

Read it, and learn! There are many slightly different points of view on this--the world is still finding the way to do the best job of making the body age well. Suzanne Sommers' voice is an important one, she has gathered many doctor's experience and opinions here which are of value. I also think people should read, Dr. Plehner's, "Pets at Risk" which has a simpler way of balancing the hormones and the underlying biochemistry, but is extremely effective with an absolute economy of means. from the results I have had after fifteen years of working with the Plechner system in animals, they live a lot longer--it is truly anti-aging medicine.

I don't like reading books like that
Extremely repetitive and very dark. Boy she can bring you down with her dark outlook on what's ahead of you during Menopause. I may as well get my suicide equipment right now so I am ready to exit life once menopause hits because according to her your brain wants to eliminate you as a human being anyway once you are not reproductive anymore. The only choice you have to not sink into depression and put on 20 pounds and become a miserable old and bitter woman is to start taking bioidentical hormones. Even though she offers what is a "solution" to all this (at least in her opinion it is) the book still has an extreme negative tone to it. I don't like reading books like that. Mentioning it once would have been but trying to brainwash your readers is uncool.

This is an amazing book by a totally unexpected author! I was on birth control pills for about 10 years with horrible side effects of constant migraines and other issues.

I also am a long term runner and was having a major slump in energy, nothing like what I was used to. I was in my late ' 30s and totally exhausted. Very strange. I don't think that was related to the pills, but it was just wierd.

I also am a long term runner and was having a major slump in energy, nothing like what I was used to. I was in my late ' 30s and totally exhausted. Very strange. I don't think that was related to the pills, but it was just wierd.

Not to mention I discovered that birth control pills taken over long periods of time often cause various types of cancer. Ahhhh!!! I was running for the hills (away from birth control pills) with no solution to the different physical issues I had going on.

I had no idea that there was a difference between synthetic hormones and bio-identical hormones. I had never heard of bio-identical hormones. Bio meaning "of the body" so bio-identical means the same as what would naturally come from the body.

A friend gave me this book and it was just what I needed. First of all, the author speaks in normal English, not medical terms. She walks you through every hormone, explains what it does and what the symptoms are if you have too much or too little in your system. There are interviews with multiple doctors on the subject giving their detailed answers and advice. There are lists of doctors all around the country that know this field and can help you.

You learn from this book the dangers of synthetic hormones. An example is Premarin, a very commonly prescribed brand of synthetic hormone for women. It actually is gotten from horse urine! And it often has tremendous side effects. Your doctor doesn't tell you that. Maybe your doctor doesn't even know that, but it's true.

I found a doctor in my area and I'm happy to report I'm pretty much migraine free. I get maybe one or two a year, not every other day like before. I sleep well now, I have more energy. I'm in my ' 40s and my body is transitioning well.

Hormones are responsible for a lot of your body's functions and can affect so many things: your sleep, weight, energy, mood swings, period cramps, migraines, the list goes on. This applies to both men and women. This book has data for both.

Before you saddle yourself with drugs and anti-depressants, get informed and at least see if this data makes sense to you. ...more

Everyone should read this, even if it is a bit repetitive
The information is useful. But it is a little bit repetitive. Thank goodness she has done all the research but I think she could get the message across without having to get so many experts to repeat her point.

This was amazing with all of the information and symptoms tied to low hormones. It was an easy read even though there was a lot of information from doctors and information about the effects on your body. The suggestions seemed a little overwhelming at times even though I realize I probably shouldn't eat sugar at all ever for the rest of my life it still seems a little extreme but I can still take what I want from it and be better off.

I liked this book
I liked this book, but it takes a long time to read, because of all the testemonials. It's a big advertisement for bio identicals. However, that being said,
I went to a bio- identical doctor, and they did my blood work, and I am taking them. I am now on them for about 3 weeks, and my hot flashes have stopped, and I am feeling pretty darn good! So far so good!! Thanks Suzanne!

Living a good life
This book is filled with great information but gets boring to read after the first couple of chapters. Ten years later and there is only one doctor in a 100 mile radius that will do bioidentical hormone treatment. So modern medicine is still in the reactive mode rather than proactive. I used some of her advice though and feel remarkably better in just one month so I recommend taking some kind of action to her advice. Try to eat right, exercise and find support for this problem that is natural.

Suzanne delivers some great insight into the world of hormonal changes, for women and men, and gives one hope that life doesn't have to be filled with the "seven dwarfs of menopause". She sheds light on the damage we have done to our bodies through skin care products, antibiotics to birth control. I heard so much about this book I had to check it out. As I suspected it's total hogwash. If you follow it you will end up paying a great deal of money to some very questionable practitioners, who are not likely to be licensed for treatments that do nothing. It makes me very angry that people are buying this stuff on the basis of a fluffy headed celebrity who claims she cured her own cancer. How gullible can you be?
